USC.edu Website Addresses
USC websites are hosted on many different servers, both inside and outside of the USC network. In order to request that a specific usc.edu website address be directed to a specific server, please follow the instructions below.
Websites must comply with all USC policies and implement USC's web branding guidelines. USC's web branding guidelines can be found at www.usc.edu/identity.
NOTE: You will need a valid USCNet login to access all forms listed below.
Root-Level Redirects on www.usc.edu
For official USC websites, you may request a redirect in the form www.usc.edu/sitename to any web address in the usc.edu domain — as long as that redirect is not already in use. There is no charge for this service. Note that ITS offers redirects only on www.usc.edu. Redirects on other servers must be set up by that server’s administrator.
Redirects are updated nightly (Monday - Friday).
USC's Short URL Service
You can use USC's short URL service to create a very short web address in the form of usc.edu/xxx, where xxx is a random code assigned by the program. After you log in to this service, you will be able to create new short URLs, see a list of others you have created, and delete any that you no longer need.
Short URLs begin working immediately.
Domain Name Service (DNS) Aliases
For official USC websites, you can request that a specific usc.edu website address in the form sitename.usc.edu be directed to any IP address or server name — as long as the new host name is not already in use. There is no charge for a DNS alias.
Virtual Hosts on www.usc.edu
If your website is hosted on www.usc.edu, ITS can set your website up as a virtual host with an address of the form sitename.usc.edu. ITS charges $50 to set up each virtual host that you request.
Please create your website on www.usc.edu before requesting a virtual host.
Subdomains
For technical reasons, some departments may need a subdomain set up. There is a one-time set up fee of $50 for these subdomains.
Note that USC’s domain name server generally does not handle website addresses that are not in the usc.edu domain. However, there are a small number of exceptions. USC’s non-standard domain name guidelines are found at www.usc.edu/its/policies/domains.
