notes tipped in at end. Erik Acharius was the very last pupil of
Linnaeus and is the founder of the scientific study of lichens. Not only
did he outline the first rational system and describe a great many genera
and species from various parts of the world, but he also investigated
the previously quite neglected morphology of the lichens so thoroughly
that many morphological terms used to this day derive from him. Acharius
first important publications on lichens, describing 345 species occurring
in Sweden, of which 24 were new to science. Dieter Schierenberg,
