NOTES: “First edition of the foundation of modern ichthyology. ‘This taxonomically most important work assured Artedi the honor of being the father of the science of ichthyology’ (DSB) Petrus Artedi was a Swedish physician who died at the early age of 30. He was entrusted by Seba to write the third part of his Thesaurus dealing with fishes and one evening after meeting with Seba and some friends he lost his way in the darkness and was drowned in one of the Amsterdam canals. The work was published by his friend Linnaeus, who added a biography of Artedi. ‘It contains an analytical review of the literature and a philosophical dissertation on a natural classification, proving that he and Linnaeus agreed on the principles that were to govern the new systematics... Artedi was the first to settle definitely the notion of genus in zoology; the distinction between species and variety; and the classification into classes, orders, and maniples (families)’ (ibid.). In the second part of the work Artedi presents his famous system of classification which was adopted by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae. The book was issued in five parts: I. Bibliotheca Ichthyologia, a critical bibliography of books on fishes; II. Philosophia Ichthyolgia; III. Genera Piscium; IV. Species piscium; V. Synonima piscium. Artedi was a student friend of Linnaeus and together the two developed their ideas about taxonomy. They agreed to divide the kingdom of nature between them, Artedi studying fishes, amphibians, mammals, minerals, and , in botany, the Umbelliferae (Linaeus’ classification of the Umbelliferae in the Systema naturae is taken entirely from Artedi).” — William Patrick Watson, Catalogue 12: Science Medicine, Natural History, 2002
