NOTES: “First edition. Published simultaneously with the quarto edition of the collected scientific and philosophical writings of the celebrated Swiss naturalist and philosopher, Charles Bonnet. He ‘is considered one of the fathers of modern biology. He is distinguished for both his experimental research and his philosophy, which exerted a profound influence upon the naturalists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.’ (DSB) includes his work on entomology, on plants (proving that they have powers of sensation and discernment), evolution and the progressive development of all beings in nature, on psychology and many others. Bonnet, considered a man of genius, gave up his law studies to devote himself entirely to biological investigations and natural history. His evolutionary theories foreshadowed the evolutionary theory of Lamarck and Cuvier and was diligently studied and admired by contemporary biologists.” - Jeff Weber, catalogue no. 50
