Description: The 127 acres of the Arboretum of Los Angeles County feature plant collections arranged by geographic origin and taxonomy, various gardens and exhibits, and several historic buildings. In addition, the Plant Sciences Library makes available to the public both a computerized inventory of all the plants on the Arboretum’s grounds and a noncirculating collection of some twenty thousand horticultural and botanical books and journals. Materials in the Historical Section Archives document the site from the late nineteenth century to the present. Included are a large number of photographs of the E. J. “Lucky” Baldwin Ranch (1875–1936) and of the development of the Arboretum (1947–present), as well as photographs of the filming of movies and television shows on the Arboretum’s grounds (1937–present). Also in the archives are a few oral history interviews with former employees of the E. J. “Lucky” Baldwin Ranch which were recorded in the 1970s and 1980s; these oral histories focus on activities at the ranch between 1875 and 1909.
