Archive and Collections
Description: The collection of the California Institute of the Arts Library is contemporary in focus but offers resources for investigating the past as well. Its archival holdings include the Viola Hegyi Swisher Collection, the MCA Inc. Film Research Collection, and the California Institute of the Arts Archives. The first consists of books, magazines, programs, files, clippings, and ephemera relating to twentieth-century dance and theater from Los Angeles dance critic Viola Hegyi Swisher, whose work spans the greater part of the twentieth century. The MCA Inc. Film Research Collection contains books and manuscripts, dating from the sixteenth century to the early 1970s, on optics and early motion picture history. In the California Institute of the Arts Archives are materials that document the ongoing development of the California Institute of the Arts, as well as papers pertaining to the Chouinard Art Institute, founded in 1921, and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, founded in 1883. These two professional schools merged in 1961 to form the California Institute of the Arts, which was located in Los Angeles until it moved to Valencia in 1971. Among the materials are early planning documents, other documents and papers, drawings, photographs, posters, audiotaped interviews, and films.
