Archive and Collections

Description: Black Photographers of California is a nonprofit educational institution founded in 1984 that is dedicated to preserving and presenting the photo-graphs of established and emerging photographers and to increasing aware-ness of photography as a fine art and as a profession. Black Gallery, the exhibition space operated by Black Photographers of California, provides a venue for presenting exhibitions, programs, and special projects that challenge, inform, and educate through photography. Black Photographers of California's collection consists of over one thousand negatives for images by Harry Adams, Charles Williams, and others. Depictions of Central Avenue and of the social and political activities of various community and public figures, including Josephine Baker and Billie Holiday, constitute the core of the collection. In the institution's archives are photographs and negatives showing members of African American community organizations, politicians, and individuals from the entertainment sector in family and public settings. Also in the archives is a collection of Bob Moore's work that includes his photographs of entertainers such as June Allyson, Ivan Dixon, and Don Mitchell.
