Description: The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was formally created in 1988 from the three church bodies known as the American Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church in America, and the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches. Several congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are located in Los Angeles, and the Southern California (West) Synod of Region 2 of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is headquartered in the Los Angeles area. The Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary maintains the Region 2 Archives for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Materials from the five synods that now constitute Region 2, one of which encompasses the City of Los Angeles, are frequently added to the Region 2 Archives. The Region 2 Archives have subsumed the archives of the former American Lutheran Church district and the former Lutheran Church in America synod and their antecedents. As a result, the Region 2 Archives contain photographs held by these former church bodies, a fairly complete collection of minutes for their conventions and meetings, and a variety of items related to the religious history of the groups that formed these bodies. In most cases, the congregations formed around a single language group-usually German, English, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, or Finnish-and eventually changed, over time, to worship in English. There were many such congregations in the Los Angeles area. The Region 2 Archives are not about Los Angeles per se but rather about groups and people who have lived and worshiped in and around Los Angeles. The Region 2 Archives include, for example, memorabilia from congregations that have closed or disbanded, some of which were in the Los Angeles area. (Parish registers and similar records for closed or disbanded congregations are kept at synod offices.) The materials in the Region 2 Archives are strictly Lutheran in provenance.
Regions Covered: The holdings in the Region 2 Archives originate primarily from the Pacific Southwest. The headquarters for the American Lutheran Church and for the Lutheran Church in America were located in Los Angeles, and one of the five synods that make up Region 2 of
