Archive and Collections

Description: The American Indian Resource Center was founded in 1979 to meet the informational, cultural, and educational needs of Native Americans in Los Angeles County and to make available information about the Native American community. Its collection provides over ten thousand items, arranged by tribal affiliation, on Native American history, economics, culture, and current affairs. Its archival holdings pertain to the pre- and post-Colombian history of Native Americans, with an emphasis on Native Americans in the Southwest and California, and consist of books, photographs, audio recordings and audio-visual presentations (cassettes, CDs, videos, 16-mm films), and dissertations. Holdings also include 131 tribal and American Indian organization newspapers, and historic government publications including complete sets of Indian Claims Commission records, and Indian census rolls 1820's - 1945. The center maintains clippings files of current information about Native American community organizations, community members, and businesses in Los Angeles County. In addition, the center participates in powwows, does outreach to Southern California Native American Indian Centers, and works with other community agencies involved in Native American affairs, such as the Southwest Museum; the American Indian Studies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles; and the Los Angeles City and County Native American Indian Commission.
