This portion of the guide lists videos, in either VHS or U-matic format, located in the Boeckmann Center, Von KleinSmid Library, Leavey Library, and Social Work Library. These titles were selected for their relevance to the instructional programs in Spanish, Political Science, International Relations, Anthropology, Social Work or related disciplines and programs.

An Interpretive Exhibition of the Chicano Art Movement.

One component of the series CARA: Chicano Art: Resistance & Affirmation. 1965-1985. Artists round table discussion, with the participation of Cecilia Alvarez, Rupert García, Delilah Montoya, José Montoya, Kathy Vargas and Larry Yañez. 

The Annenberg/CPB Collection: 
This 10-part series brings to life a diverse region that encompasses great wealth and desperate poverty, countries as tiny as Jamaica and as enormous as Brazil, with democratic and authoritarian governments and a complex multicultural heritage. The series examines U.S. relations with its hemispheric neighbors and with people of Latin American and Caribbean origin living in the United States. The collection is composed of the following videocassettes:

The Garden of Forking Paths: Dilemmas of National Development.

Boeckmann Center Examines twentieth-century development of the nations and economies of the Americas, focusing on Argentina: the Peron years, the military dictatorship of the 1970s, the Malvinas/Falklands War, and the return to civilian government. Capital Sins: Authoritarianism and Democratization.

Boeckmann CenterBegins in the 1960s when many nations' economic and political systems were in disarray and a move toward authoritarian government swept the region. The film focuses on Brazil, a major and influential nation in the region, whose experience with military rule, economic growth, and redemocratization was echoed elsewhere in the Americas. Narrated in English with some spoken Spanish. 
Continent on the Move: Migration and Urbanization.

Boeckmann CenterExamines the steady flow of rural migrants in Mexico to congested cities, in search of jobs, education, and a better future for their children. The film looks at the reality of migrants' lives and the difficult choices that they must make. In English and Spanish, with English subtitles and voice-overs. 
Mirrors of the Heart: Race and Identity.

Boeckmann CenterThe film focuses on the island of Hispaniola, shared by the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, nations with very different languages, histories and cultural identities, and on Bolivia, a country with a large indigenous population. It examines the issues of race, class, and ethnic identities in the region and considers how they continue to be redefined by individuals, communities and nations. In English and Spanish, with English subtitles and voice-overs. 
In Women's Hands: The Changing Roles of Women.

Miracles Are Not Enough: Continuity and Change in Religion.

Builders of Images: Latin American Cultural Identity.

Boeckmann CenterSet in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina, the program examines the creative ferment that has given the region a prominent place on the global artistic map, tracing the evolution of the visual arts, music and literature. This video documents the challenges for artists in the region to define an authentically American voice and their effectiveness in raising important social and political issues. Get Up, Stand Up: Problems of Sovereignty.

Boeckmann CenterFocuses on the ways in which nations in the Americas struggle to maintain economic and cultural sovereignty in the face of strong pressure, both foreign and domestic. Set in Colombia, Jamaica, and Panama, the program explores a wide range of threats to sovereignty, such as domestic guerrilla activities, the power of the drug lords, and economic dependency. Fire in the Mind: Revolutions and Revolutionaries.

Boeckmann CenterLooks at the reasons for, and composition of, revolutionary movements in El Salvador and Peru. Compares and contrasts the revolutionary struggles and links these movements to earlier revolutions in Mexico, Cuba, and Nicaragua. In English and Spanish with English subtitles and voice-overs. 
The Latin American and Caribbean Presence in the U.S.

Boeckmann CenterThe program explores how communities of Latin American and Caribbean origin are challenging and redefining the U.S. sense of national identity. Gives examples of the long-established Mexican American community in Southern California, Cuban Americans in Miami, and Puerto Rican and non-Hispanic Caribbean communities in New York City.

Cabeza de Vaca.

In 1528, a Spanish expedition founders off the coast of Florida - 600 lives lost. One survivor, Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, roams across the American continent searching for his Spanish comrades. Instead he discovers the Iguase, an ancient Indian tribe. Over the next eight years, Cabeza de Vaca learns their mystical and misterious culture, becoming a healer - and a leader. But soon this New World collides with the Old World as Spanish conquistadors seek to enslave the Indians, and Cabeza de Vaca must confront his own people and his past.
