Possibly the finest
assemblage of photographs relating to the Southern California area,
the Regional History Collections (RHC) is made up of several important
photographic collections: the Hearst
Collection (1.2 million photographs) is comprised of the photographic
morgue of the Los Angeles-based Hearst newspapers dating from 1904-61;
the California Historical Society Collection
contains 23,000 photographs documenting the history of Southern California
from 1890-1960; and the "Dick"
Whittington Collection contains 500,000 negatives documenting
the commercial development of the region from 1925-60. The RHC also
contains many important archival collections, including the Los Angeles
Area Chamber of Commerce Collection, covering the period from 1890-1960.
