Injuries and Deaths

People injured during the civil disturbance often treated themselves or were transported to the hospital by friends or family. (See Hackworth, 1992; and Sipchen, 1992 for a discussion of the political problems with the language used to discuss this civil disturbance.) EMTs treated and released many patients at the scene, or transported them by ambulance, fire rescue vehicle, or by police car to an emergency department for care. LAEMSA data reports the number of injured cared for at hospitals. EMSA estimated the number of injured who were treated and released and released in the field from an EMSA survey of EMTs who responded to South Central Los Angeles. There is no data available on the number of people who treated their own injuries during the civil disturbance.
