Transport of the Injured by Non-EMS Personnel

Casualties were transported to the hospital by a number of means, not just by EMTs. According to a CDC study ambulances accounted for 33.9% of the transports, police cars 11.3%, and walk-ins for 12.9%. About 30.6% were brought in by private automobile (CDC, 1992, p. 1). The remaining 12.3% is unknown. The number of self transports may be higher than that reported by the CDC data. Some hospital emergency department staff estimated that from 60% to 70% arrived this way.
