Cost of Providing Care

Daniel Freeman Hospital reported that from 75% to 80% of those receiving care had no insurance, were Medical, or depended on a source of payment other than private insurance. Probably about 60% were working poor. They estimate a loss of $1.5 to $2.5 million during the period of the disturbance and for treating 452 patients.

Private hospitals that treated the injured applied to the Office of Emergency Services and FEMA for reimbursement of costs. OES turned down their initial requests. FEMA, on the other hand, unofficially said that they are eligible. The EMS Authority and LAEMSA are working together with the Southern California Hospital Council to provide an avenue for reimbursement which ties together the hospital and county's claims.
