Evergreen Cemetery


Evergreen Cemetery is the oldest (1877) existing cemetery in the city of Los Angeles; it is a bounded by Brooklyn Avenue, Evergreen Street, lst Street, and Brooklyn Avenue. It is also one of the largest cemeteries, with 300,000 grave sites.

Many of the city's pioneers are buried here: the Workmans, Hollenbecks, Lankershim and Van Nuys, Coulters, and Bixbys.

The Garden of the Pines section of Evergreen is a memorial to Issei pioneers of Los Angeles. The section near lst and Lorena was at one time a potter's field.

Former slave, Biddy Mason, who became free and acquired considerable property, is buried here.
