Hillside Memorial Park, at 6001 Centinela Avenue, is a familiar sight to
many of Los Angeles freeway commuters, although not all may realize that
it is a cemetery. What is especially noticeable well above and at some distance from the San Diego Freeway is the burial site of Al Jolson. It is a domed marble structure designed by the famous African American architect, Paul Williams. A waterfall cascades 120 feet down the hillside. Other famous people whose remains are interred here are David Janssen, Mary and Jack Benny, Eddie Cantor, Jeff Chandler, Dick Shawn, Allan Sherman, Percy Faith, Mickey Cohen, and Vic Morrow. |
