San Fernando Mission Cemetery

The San Fernando Mission was established in 1797 and the first burial there was 1800 (the first interment in the church is listed as 1798). It is a small but very attractive cemetery, giving little hint that over 2400 people are buried there. The register's last entry is 1852.

The burial grounds were originally intended for "Christianized Indians", but there are also Spanish and at least five priests buried here.

Many of the burials are multiple, and certainly during the early years were made directly into the ground without caskets.

The cemetery is located at 1160 Stranwood Avenue in San Fernando.
