El Pueblo de Los Angeles
El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Park consists of 44 acres,
bounded by Alameda, Arcadia, Spring, and Macy Streets; it contains a number of historical landmarks:
- Avila Adobe, built in 1818 by rancher Don
Francisco Avila; oldest existing residence in the city.
- Old Plaza was the center of activity in the old pueblo of Los
Angeles. Present Plaza (1815) is short distance from original, moved
because of flooding.
Olvera Street is one of the oldest streets in
the city, and now serves as a Mexican marketplace.
- Pico House.
- Sepulveda House, 1887, built as residence, hotel, and boarding
house.
Statue of Felipe de Neve, founder of Los
Angeles, who in 1781 was ordered by King Carlos III of Spain to found the
Pueblo. Felipe de Neve served as governor of California from 1775 to 1782.
Statue of Carlos III, who in 1781
ordered Felipe de Neve to found El Pueblo de Los Angeles. Statue was
erected in 1976 in honor of the 200th anniversary of the U.S., and was
dedicated by King Don Juan Carlos of Spain.
