Fort Moore

The Fort Moore Memorial commemorates a fort built during the Mexican-American War (1847); it was on July 4th, the first time American Independence Day had been celebrated in Los Angeles.

The fort itself was constructed on what was earlier called Fort Hill, a prominent hill overlooking the pueblo. The material for the fort waas obtained from timber in the San Gabriel mountains, with a volunteer Mormon battalion doing most of the work. It was named for Captain Benjamin Moore who was killed at the Battle of San Pasqual in 1846.

Today the promontory is occupied by the Los Angeles Unified School District. The memorial is on Hill Street, between Temple and Ord Streets.
