Los Angeles Newspapers at Los Angeles Public Library

Although we tend now to think of Los Angeles as a one or two newspaper city, during much of its history the city has had numerous newspapers. Most of these are completely forgotten, but during the time they were published, they too offer very useful historical material.

The History Department of the main branch of Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) is the repository for most of these newspapers, although some are also in branch libraries. Each branch also has a copy of the newspaper holdings of the system. Selective indexing is provided to some of these newspapers by the Departments's "California History Card Index."

The list of Los Angeles newspapers given below is just a partial list, with dates being those of the holdings at LAPL. Many of the newspapers -- perhaps most -- went through name changes and mergers; no attempt has been made to give the complete history. Go to Early Newspapers if you want more detailed information on the earliest papers in the city.

In addition to these major newspapers there have been a great many other newspapers which served a particular region or district within Los Angeles. Many of these are also held on microfilm by LAPL.
