Articles
There are quite a large number of journals, offprints, reprints, and cut-out articles in Schoenberg's legacy. Many articles written by Schoenberg, were cut out of their original publications and placed in his text manuscript category or "Gedruckte Aufsätze." Complete journals and, in those cases where Schoenberg removed an article, mostly complete journals are arranged into one alphabetical series by journal title; whereas offprints, reprints, and cut-out articles not by Schoenberg are arranged in a second alphabetical series by author.
Additional journals and articles in the Archive Vault may be found in many of the 200 plus satellite collections.
Some titles which are represented by numerous issues include:
- Musikblätter des Anbruch (and Anbruch)
- Die Fackel
- Der Merker
- Pult und Taktstock
The archive also contains virtually complete runs on microfilm in reprint of all four of the above titles.
As an ongoing project in the Archive, a comprehensive database of articles on and by Schoenberg is maintained. This database, which can be searched by the Archivist upon request, currently has more than 5,000 citations in it. The citations have been compiled from hundreds of bibliographies. Many of the citations contain abstracts. The database is continually updated as new information is received. It is the objective of the Institute to collect all of these articles for the use of on-site researchers and scholars. To date, approximately 4,000 articles have been made available in the Reading Room of the Institute.
Individuals are encouraged to send an offprint or photocopy of their newly published articles for inclusion in the database and the file of articles for local usage at the Center in Vienna. If this is not possible, information regarding new publications is still welcomed.
Clippings
Schoenberg subscribed to a clipping service, The Observer, for many years in Europe. Consequently, his legacy contains a rather large number of newsclippings dating from the first decade of the twentieth century to his death in 1951. Many additional clippings are preserved in the satellite collections, in particular the Gertrud Schoenberg Collection.
The main series of clippings are principally reviews of Schoenberg concerts. These are arranged chronologically by the date of the event on which they report. A second series includes reviews and announcements of non-Schoenberg concerts and non-musical events and are arranged in the same manner as the Schoenberg concert reviews. A third series includes reviews of publications arranged first by format (book, recording, score, etc.) and second by author or title of the item being reviewed. A fourth and final series is arranged strictly chronologically and includes everything which does not fit into any of the other series.
