Schoenberg’s Text Manuscripts & the Sonia Lane Cards

back

The Sonia Lane cards were subarranged mostly alphabetically into fewer categories than the typed Scriptorium inventory was arranged. Clara Steuermann, the first Archivist of the Institute, supplemented the cards with subject and name added-entry cards during her tenure (1975-1981). Thus at least two types of cards may be found in the inventory portion of the card file:

  1. original cards, generally printed (handwritten) in blue ink, containing full information
  2. added-entry cards printed (handwritten) in red ink, referring the user back to the main entry cards for fuller information

In addition to added-entry access, the card version of the Scriptorium Inventory provides the following information, not found in the typed version: microfiche numbers (“MF” at the top of each original card), Rufer reference numbers (lower right corner of each original card), Schoenberg’s own numbering scheme (selectively) highlighted in yellow, and the Archive “call number” (if cataloged) in pencil and encircled. There may also be a portion of each original card underlined in red ink indicating where the item, to which the card refers, is alphabetically filed. Interpreting the cards can take some getting used to so the user was encouraged to communicate directly with Archive staff if something was unclear or the user wanted to see the manuscript described on a given card.
