Electronic Resources Usage Guidelines

Please note: Users of electronic resources should be aware that usage of electronic databases, e-journals, e-books and other research websites is governed by license agreements and terms & conditions set forth by vendors and publishers from which we license materials.

Access to these resources is paid for by USC's Information Services Division's libraries and is for the exclusive use of USC faculty, students, and staff. Misuse of the resources may result in withdrawal of a license to the whole campus and possible penalties for the responsible party under university regulations.

Examples of misuse include:

  • Systematic downloading of materials. While the exact number of downloads is generally not specified, it is prudent to limit downloads to a number commensurate with your research needs. For example downloading of whole issues of journals is expressedly forbidden.
  • Storing downloaded materials on internet accessible servers.
  • Systematic printing for purposes other than personal or scholarly use.
  • Reverse engineering programming and software structures.
  • Running automated search scripts or robots to mine data from a resource is not allowed and puts a strain on the computing capacity of a vendor or publisher.
  • Copyright violations.

If you are in doubt about what the license terms or terms & conditions are, please contact IDOR Serials serials@usc.edu for further information.

USC complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
