Administrative History

The Lambda Literary Foundation (LLF) traces its beginnings to 1987 with the publication of the first issue of the Lambda Book Report, a review periodical of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender literature. The periodical was published by L. Page (Deacon) Maccubbin, owner of Lambda Rising Bookstore in Washington, D.C. The Lambda Literary Awards program, an annual ceremony celebrating excellence in LGBT literature, was established in 1989. The Lambda Literary Foundation was incorporated in 1997 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to officially host the Awards and the  Lambda Book Report. Jim Marks was the LLF's first Executive Director. The LLF was founded to nurture, celebrate, and preserve LGBT literature through programs that honor excellence, promote visibility and encourage development of emerging writers.
