The mission of the Hoose Library of Philosophy is to serve the educational and research needs of graduate and undergraduate students, as well as faculty, regarding all aspects of academic philosophy and its allied disciplines. The library's collection and resources primarily serve the School of Philosophy as well as other university departments interested in the philosophical foundations of the liberal arts and sciences. The collection and resources comprise more than 50,000 volumes. The collection is particularly rich in the intellectual history of Western civilization.
The Hoose Philosophy Library offers in-depth reference service during our normal hours of operation. Print and electronic reference sources are available in the library. For consultation on study topics or advice on what to read in any given area of philosophy, please contact the librarian.
Materials are put on reserve each semester for certain philosophy courses. Reserves must be requested at the circulation desk. The patron must have a valid and updated student identification card.
The library instruction program for the Hoose Philosophy Library includes classroom presentations, course-integrated instruction, research seminars and workshops focused on both the undergaduate and graduate levels in philosophy and intellectual history. The librarian also offers orientation at the beginning of each semester for new graduate students in philosophy.
