K. C. Cole is a professor at USC’s Annenberg School of Journalism. A former science writer for the Los Angeles Times, she is a commentator for Southern California Public Radio (KPCC) and a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Smithsonian, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Esquire, Newsweek, Ms. and other publications. Among her books are Mind over Matter: Conversations with the Cosmos; The Hole in the Universe: How Scientists Peered over the Edge of Emptiness and Found Everything; and The Universe and the Teacup: The Mathematics of Truth and Beauty. Honors include the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Prize, the Los Angeles Times awards for deadline reporting and best explanatory journalism, and the Skeptics Society’s Edward R. Murrow Award for thoughtful coverage of scientific controversies. Cole has taught at UCLA, Yale, and Wesleyan. For several years, she has organized Categorically Not!, a series of events exploring the common ground between art, science, and whatnot, at Santa Monica Art Studios. Cole has recently completed a memoir/ biography of the late physicist and founder of San Francisco’s Exploratorium, Frank Oppenheimer.
