USC Scripter® Award

Scripter > About > Los Angeles Times Reference Room

Named in recognition of a generous gift from the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Times Reference Room in the Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library serves each spring as home to the USC Scripter Award gala.

With its bronze and pewter chandeliers, recessed American walnut bookshelves, and windows of leaded antique English glass, this magnificent room provides USC faculty and students access to a broad range of resources that support their research, including the central reference desk. The room's gold and pastel coffered ceiling — created by John D. Smeraldi, who also decorated the ceilings of the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel — is banded with a frieze of hand-carved printers' marks, chronicling the early history of book making.
