A Beautiful Mind

The 14th annual USC Scripter® Award brought two unique writers to Doheny Memorial Library: Pulitzer-prize finalist Sylvia Nasar and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman. Their work on A Beautiful Mind was honored at the ceremony held on Saturday, March 16, 2002.

On hand to present Sylvia Nasar with her Scripter crystal book was actor Josh Lucas, who portrayed Nash's Princeton rival Martin Hansen in the film. Actor Paul Bettany, who portrayed Nash's prodigal roommate, Charles Herman, presented the honors to Akiva Goldsman. Producer Albert S. Ruddy served as selection committee chair while USC alumnus and Friends of the USC Libraries board member Joan Jani-Mimms led the event committee.

Stage, film and television actor Gavin MacLeod served as master of ceremonies with legendary comedy writer Hal Kanter returning as grand master of ceremonies. Other presenters included Chief Information Officer and Dean of the University Libraries Jerry D. Campbell, USC Trustee and Chairman of the Walt Disney Studios Richard Cook and actress and Scripter selection committee member Anne Archer. Two of the year's finalists - Helen Fielding, author and co-screenwriter of Bridget Jones's Diary, and Rob Festinger, screenwriter of In the Bedroom - also attended the event.

The evening concluded with a musical performance of the film's love song, All Love Can Be, written by USC alumnus and Academy Award®-winning composer James Horner, and performed by USC student and soprano Anya Matanovic, who was accompanied by conductor Jason Goldman and a mini-orchestra comprised of students from the USC Thornton School of Music.
