Safe Halloween
The USC Norman Topping Student Aid Fund, in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, organizes the annual Safe Halloween event to provide a safe celebration for children in the local community. In coordination with the Hoover Recreation Center's staff, Topping Scholars annually plan and provide a one-night extravaganza, held on October 31 of each year, with inflatable games, a haunted house, candy, crafts and treats for neighborhood youth.

SC PAW -- Southern California People for Animal Rescue
This program finds loving homes for the abandoned animals found on and around the USC campus. SC PAW has established relationships with groups to help with spay and neuter efforts. It is commited to lowering the number of healthy animals killed in shelters through spay/neuter education and conducts ongoing rescues and participates regularly in adoption fairs.|

Science, Technology and Research Program
The USC STAR Program, sponsored by the USC School of Pharmacy, offers high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to learn science by joining a basic science research team at the USC Health Sciences and University Park campuses for one or more years. The program particularly seeks to involve students from ethnic groups that are typically underrepresented in the sciences. Funded in part by a USC Neighborhood Outreach grant.

Small Business Development Office
Services and programs include company registration with USC; referrals to buyers and/or end users; workshops on "Doing Business With USC," annual departmental recognition reception acknowledging excellence in utilizing diverse suppliers; small business networking event; small business trade fair held every year; participation in outreach activities, including vendor/trade fairs organized by various organizations; contract compliance for USC federal contracts; liaison between USC and vendors; and publication of vendor directory.

Social Science Research Institute
The Social Science Research Institute is a multidisciplinary research institute housing two major centers. SSRI has for years focused on Los Angeles in general as a location for applied social research. The Center for Longitudinal Research focuses on understanding the roots of human behavioral deviance, violent and non-violent crime, mental illness and certain brain disorders. The center concentrates on neuroscience and biological research methods and the examination of the interactions of biological, psychological and sociological approaches to these problems. The Center for Research on Crime and Social Control has been USC's focal point for research on the criminal justice system, juvenile gangs, status offenders, the criminal courts and other crime issues. The center is active in management of social program evaluations as well as locating and interacting with local authorities and service organizations, which is crucial to any social program's success.

Society of Women Engineers Halloween Fun Fair
Students from the USC Family of Schools are invited to the USC campus for some safe Halloween fun. Volunteers from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the USC Volunteer Center run activity stations that include bobbing for apples, cookie decorating and face painting. Pi?atas and a magician round off the morning of fun for both volunteers and elementary students.

Southern California Earthquake Center Communication, Education and Outreach Program
SCEC efforts in earthquake-related education encourage public participation in and understanding of earthquake science, enhance K-12 programs, and distribute original educational products that highlight SCEC research. USC students from many majors participate in the SCEC internship program, which provides opportunities for student involvement in research and education projects.

Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center
The SCEHSC primarily focuses on using epidemiologic methods to study the effects of the environment on human health, especially with regard to the multiethnic populations of California and the Pacific Rim. The center maintains a Community Outreach and Education Program to develop models for community outreach and school curricula to educate the public on how to control, reduce or eliminate the threat of living with environmental hazards. Dissemination of research findings to the health care, corporate and policy-making communities and the environmental public at large enables the SCEHSC to facilitate an informed public debate. The center is actively engaged in a number of efforts with community-based organizations and schools. For example, the center has trained school nurses and teachers on issues involving air pollution and respiratory health effects. The center has also produced a documentary video entitled, "A Breath of Air: What Air Pollution is Doing to Our Children."

Southern California Studies Center
The Southern California Studies Center (SC2) is a nonpartisan, multidisciplinary research and educational organization that mobilizes the intellectual resources of the University of Southern California to illuminate the distinctive characteristics and dynamics of Southern California, and to foster intramural and extramural cooperation in confronting the challenges and opportunities facing the region.

Spanish Cultural Resource Center
This center provides support to institutions, educators and persons involved or interested in teaching and learning Spanish. The center offers resources (an extensive library, including didactic materials, literature, encyclopedias, children's books, videos, online materials, and more), and teacher training courses. SCRC also organizes cultural events related to the Spanish language and culture.

Special Patient Care Dental Clinic
The Special Care Dental Clinic provides dental evaluation and treatment for patients with medically compromising conditions, including developmental disabilities and mental and physical impairments. The clinic also provides dental treatment under I.V. sedation and general anesthesia for developmentally disabled patients.

Spend the Day with LBSA
In its 15th annual "Spend the Day with LBSA," 250 students from five Los Angeles area high schools were given the opportunity to attend USC classes and tours. These students were matched by their career interests with other USC students. A motivational speech on Latinos was also given by an invited speaker, and included lunch and entertainment. Sponsored by the USC Philanthropy Fund, Ferguson Enterprises and LBSA (Latino Student Business Association).

Spirits In Action
This is a one-day event for physically and mentally disabled athletes of all ages. Athletes compete in track and field games and receive ribbons for their participation. Each athlete is paired with a USC student who acts as his or her buddy for the day. Co-sponsored by the USC Philanthropy Fund.

STARS Mentoring Day
The purpose of the STARS Mentoring Day is to inspire and increase exposure of high school students to the fields of engineering and the science through hands on activities. STARS brings high school students from the community to USC and allows them to experience the research and projects that current college students are performing. Students are led through a variety of labs from different engineering departments. Labs include the physics sombustion laboratory, a robotics laboratory, an engine laboratory, a civil engineering laboratory and a wind tunnel laboratory. Students are allowed to take part in and witness various sab demonstrations throughout the day.

Street Law High School Outreach
USC law students do outreach to local high schools, serving as guest lecturers, mentors and hosts for school visits to campus. At Manual Arts High School, the USC Street Law Foundation Program is funded bya USC Neighborhood Outreach grant.

Substance Abuse Treatment Program
Free, outpatient services are available for youth between the ages of 12 and 24 who have an alcohol or drug problem. Individuals may call directly for an appointment or be referred by an agency. Services funded by Los Angeles County Alcohol and Drug Program Administration.

Swim With Mike
Swim With Mike is an annual fundraiser to raise money for scholarships for students who have overcome life-challenging accidents or illnesses. Since its inception in 1981, Swim With Mike has raised more than $5 million for 46 full scholarships, including providing financial assistance towards housing and books.
