Mentors and Tutoring
Adventures Ahead
Adventures Ahead is a neighborhood-based after-school tutoring program of Redeemer Community Partnership. The program provides tutoring, mentoring and recreational opportunities for children and families in the Exposition Park neighborhood. In partnership with the community and families, Adventures Ahead seeks to empower local children to become tomorrow's leaders. Currently, approximately 30 children in kindergarten through sixth-grade participate in regular tutoring and recreation programs. Approximately 60-75 kids participate in an expanded summer program.

Asian American Tutorial Project
Children from first to sixth grade receive one-on-one tutoring and mentoring every Saturday. Primarily situated at Castelar Elementary School in Chinatown, service is provided for the entire year, but split into four, seven-week sessions, in cooperation with Occidental College and UCLA. Since 1968, AATP has reached over 200 elementary students and over 200 tutors each year.

Baccalaureate M.D.-Bravo Science Tutoring
Baccalaurate M.D. students, freshmen and sophomores tutor freshman- and sophomore-level Francisco Bravo Magnet High School students in the sciences and other areas to enable them to continue to excel in science, math and social studies. The students are tutored for approximately eight weeks, two hours per week.

Best Buddies
Best Buddies strives to enhance the lives of people who have intellectual disabilities through one-to-one friendships with college students. USC volunteers offer a "buddy" the chance to have a friendship outside of their own environment.

Bravo High School Biomedical Research Course
Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School biomedical students learn and carry out research projects in USC research laboratories and under the direction of USC Health Sciences Campus faculty during the school year. The research is presented in high school science fairs, and projects have gone on to win honors at county, state and national science fair competitions. The students gain a working knowledge of specific lab techniques, an in-depth appreciation of their mentor's research project, and the methods utilized in scientific investigations.

Century/Learning Initiatives For Today
Students in grades K-12 receive homework assistance and up to 12 hours per week of reading comprehension and mathematics tutoring, technology enrichment and field trip opportunities. Students are grouped by grade level and work with the same tutor daily. Individual tutoring is available. Tutors are teachers, college students and high-achieving high school students. College/financial aid advisement and vocational education referrals are available. Parents, guardians and advocates also volunteer in the program. Free to participating students. Created in partnership with USC, Foshay Learning Center, DanBerg Development, Inc., and Century Housing Corporation.

COBA Saturday Success Academy
The academy offers an Africentrically infused curriculum designed to enhance academic skills and ensure the cultural grounding of African American students. The academy meets on the USC campus on Saturdays. Students are enrolled in two classes per session, one related to African American history and culture and the other oriented to the development of mathematics and English-language skills with an emphasis on economics. Parents participate in parenting and history classes. Two, ten-week semesters per year.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund - Scholar Chapter
Established as a university chapter of the national Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the chapter's goals are to facilitate the educational and professional success of Latino students by promoting principles and practices of high academic achievement. Specifically, the HSF helps students to leverage the resources in order to attain their chosen degree, develop professional skills, and serve as mentors and peer resources for other students.

Joint Educational Project
JEP is a service-learning program based in USC College. The program is designed to broker between academic courses and schools and service agencies in the University Park neighborhood. Each year JEP places approximately 2,000 students as mentors, mini-course instructors, translators, assistants to teachers and other helping professionals. Since 1972, students from over 65 different academic courses have attempted to understand the practical implications and applications of course-related concepts through community-service activities. Their work involves weekly reflective exercises as well as an end-of-semester paper, and is supported by classroom instructors and teaching assistants.

Mastering the Admission Process
The MAP Program is a formal outreach program for middle school AVID students. The program identifies and follows students through their high school careers and encourages them to pursue a college degree from any four-year institution. Students are introduced to the advantages of a college degree, options for higher education, preparation for college entrance exams, the college admission and financial aid process. The program also provides informative workshops for parents. ||USC students provide mentoring, tutoring, and program building by utilizing their talents and studies. MAP leaders will be trained in techniques and strategies to help enhance students' academic performance, assist students in setting realistic goals and reinforce positive school-related behaviors.

Medical Counseling, Organizing and Recruitment Program
This Saturday tutorial program emphasizes support in math, science and English. Students are placed in small groups (approximately 15) and tutorial assistance is provided by undergraduate students primarily. Selected student participants are also offered a summer work-study experience in a health care facility. All student participants have demonstrated an interest in attending college and ultimately gaining entry into a health profession career.

Naval ROTC Volunteer Program, "A Partnership to Promote Literacy"
The USC Naval ROTC Volunteer Program is a community-service program utilizing the talents and skills of the USC Midshipmen Battalion to benefit the immediate Los Angeles community surrounding the University of Southern California. The project at L. B. Weemes Elementary School officially known as "A Partnership to Promote Literacy" involves working with classes, tutoring individual students, sponsoring a Read-A-Thon, and organizing a spring awards ceremony to recognize Read-A-Thon participants.

Rites of Sisterhood
ROS provides intervention outreach and mentor services for young women who attend middle school near the USC campus. Weekly Saturday sessions are held and cultural awareness field trips are organized. Sponsored by the USC Philanthropy Fund.

Tom Bradley Elementary School
This program brings medical students in contact with inner-city elementary school students. The medical students tutor, mentor and make presentations at the school. The students visit the USC Health Sciences Campus twice a year to get hands-on experience about medical school.

USC African Millenium Pen Pal Project
In support of preparation for the writing component of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), students will be engaged in an intense writing program that focuses on narrative and expository discourse, increased vocabulary and improved basic writing skills. This is also achieved, in part, by regular written correspondence with students from two African nationsl.

USC Literacy Project
The USC Literacy Project is a volunteer program that works along with the USC ReadersPlus Program assisting individual USC Family of Schools' students in the area of reading. The goal is to encourage a love for reading in students while bringing them up to an appropriate reading level.

USC ReadersPlus
This program places USC students with work-study grants (and a limited number of non work-study students, when outside funding allows) in five of the USC Family of Schools as elementary literacy and math tutors. Reading tutors engage in one-on-one tutoring with kindergarten through sixth-grade students in reading, writing and language development during school hours and oral reading and skill development with individuals and groups after-school. Math tutors engage in one-on-one tutoring with kindergarten through twelfth-grade students in math and algebra skills development and problem solving, and assist individuals and small groups in computer labs and after-school math activities. Funded in part by a USC Neighborhood Outreach grant.
