LIST OF DISASTER SUPPLIES AND SUPPLIERS

Designed for use with a
Library Disaster Preparedness and Collection Salvage Plan

INTRODUCTION

The List of Disaster Supplies and Suppliers was prepared by the Preservation Office of the UCLA Library as part of the Library's disaster response and collection salvage plan. The written plan concentrates on the protection of the Library's collections and their salvage in the event of a disaster. Therefore, the List does not include supplies and services relevant to the safety, protection or rescue of staff and users, nor to the maintenance and repair of library buildings.

Although the List attempts to include all the necessary supplies and services for disaster response, it is not a comprehensive directory for their sources. In the choice of suppliers there is a bias in favor of those situated in and around Los Angeles, or national suppliers with local outlets. When the vendors for an item exceed in number those likely to be needed to cope with a disaster in one of the UCLA Library units, they have been selected on the basis of their proximity to UCLA or of existing contracts with the University. The List can also serve in other parts of Southern California, and beyond, as a model for a disaster supply list.

It is in the nature of lists such as this one never to reach a final or complete state -- suppliers come and go; there are frequent personnel and price changes; new products appear; and new methods of collection salvage, together with their associated supplies, continually demand the attention of preservation staff. We have updated the list regularly; this text is a completely new edition.

The List contains no guidance on when and how to use the supplies, as responses to various kinds of disaster, both large and small, are usually given in a separate section of the written disaster preparedness and collection salvage plan. At some future time LAPNet may offer checklists of disaster response actions, and may also consider issuing notes on suggested uses for the disaster supplies.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Inclusion in the List is NOT an endorsement of a vendor, either by UCLA or LAPNet. Many vendors of good repute not listed also offer the same supplies and services.

GUIDE TO CONTENTS

1. Index of Headings. This listing provides quick identification of the terms used as headings in this document. Some synonyms are listed here as well, with See: references to the heading used in the document.

Vendor entries include contact names, whenever possible. Some suppliers are too large for such an arrangement to work well, and it is more efficient to speak to any staff member in the Customer Service Department. All telephone numbers are for daytime business hours, unless stated otherwise. The unit of sale and the cost of each unit are given. When it can be ascertained, the estimated maximum quantity held by a supplier is included. Notes are appended to a basic entry when necessary.

2. Index of Suppliers. This listing by vendor name shows all the supplies and services that can be obtained from each vendor within the context of the List.
