COSEE-West strives to improve K-12 ocean science education through activities that provide high quality science content and resources for K-12 Teachers and Informal Educators

(pre-service and intern teachers welcomed!)

COSEE Network Meeting: 2008

COSEE-West Year 5 Annual Report

New 2007-2012 Upcoming Programs:

Online workshops based on university ocean science courses.

We will be offering online marine science short courses taught by university professors and moderated by university science undergraduate and graduate students. Topics will cover a wide range of interests and will incorporate findings from current ocean science research. Participants will be able to receive 1 university credit (optional) for each 2-3 week course.

Teacher on-site professional development.

COSEE-West trained teachers will conduct workshops in ocean science for teachers in their own schools and districts. These COSEE-West mentor teachers will utilize the content of both archived and new COSEE-West lectures and resources. Workshops content and activities will be aligned with Ocean Literacy Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts (OLEPFC) and California Science Education Standards.

Summer teacher institute.

A full week program conducted at USC/UCLA, Wrigley Marine Science Center or an informal education center, focused on Ocean Observing Systems. Targeted for middle and high school teachers (grades 6-12), successful applicants will learn how to apply information and near real-time data from Ocean Observing Systems into classroom lessons and activities. Instruction will also include and OLEPFC module. A stipend will be offered and participants will work in teams to create new lesson plans for their own classroom.

Connecting researchers with public outreach.

COSEE-West will host retreats for scientists and educators aimed at developing ideas for translating current ocean science research into exhibits at informal education centers. Teachers and high school and undergraduate students in both the arts and sciences will also be invited and encouraged to participate in these retreats.

Informal educator professional development.

COSEE-West will offer two professional development workshops each year designed specifically to build the content knowledge of informal education center staff and volunteers in current ocean science research. Scientists will present their research through lectures, hands-on demonstrations and simulations of research techniques, theories and methods.
