The QuikSCience COSEE-West Ocean Leadership Awards recognize educators who make outstanding contributions to K-12 ocean science education.

Nomination Categories:

  1. Formal Teaching Excellence Award – for the teachers who are active in developing and implementing innovative and effective approaches to learning and teaching of ocean sciences; three subcategories:
    1. Elementary school teacher (K – 5)
    2. Middle school teacher (6 – 8)
    3. High school teacher (9 – 12)
  2. Informal Teaching Excellence Award – for environmental educators who demonstrate a commitment to developing and implementing effective and innovative approaches to learning and teaching of ocean sciences in informal (free-choice) environments (i.e. outdoor science camps, aquariums, museums).
  3. Early Career Award – given to encourage novice teachers (with less than two years teaching experience) who have demonstrated an interest and commitment to developing and implementing effective and innovative approaches to learning and teaching of ocean sciences.
  4. Commitment to Education Award – for those individuals involved in the field of education whose actions and special contributions have helped improve K-12 teaching and learning of ocean sciences; three subcategories:
    1. School or district administrator
    2. University researcher/scientist
    3. Education volunteer (e.g., student, parent, or retiree)

HOW TO NOMINATE

Selection Criteria:

These awards are open to anyone in California whose activities or qualifications match those of the nomination categories. Candidates may be self-nominated or nominated by a colleague/peer.

Nominations should be emailed to Terri Lynn Bidle (bidle@usc.edu)
and should include:

  1. Name of the individual
  2. Address
  3. Phone number
  4. Email
  5. Occupation and Institution
  6. Grade level (if appropriate)
  7. Number of years working in education
  8. Award Category (and subcategory, if appropriate)
  9. Name of the nominator and relationship to the nominee (e.g., colleague, peer, supervisor, etc.)

A one-page narrative describing the activities and contributions of the individual that make them an ideal candidate for an Ocean Leadership Award. Examples of qualifications to address in the narrative include (but are not limited to):

  • Interest and enthusiasm for teaching and for promoting student learning of ocean sciences.
  • Ability to arouse curiosity and to inspire independent learning, and the development of critical thought.
  • Command of the subject matter, including the incorporation of recent developments in the field of study of ocean sciences.
  • Ability to present subject matter imaginatively, with innovation in the design and delivery of content materials.
  • Participation in professional development activities related to teaching of  ocean sciences.

Up to one additional (and optional) external letter of recommendation may also be submitted (do not send more than one).

DEADLINE

The Deadline for Nominations is February 1, 2008 

Awards will be announced March 6, 2008 at Open House

Applications will be judged by a panel of USC and Quiksilver ocean educators, scientists and enthusiasts. Awards will be made in those categories for which there are an adequate number of qualified applications. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Each Awardee will receive a $500 stipend and a QuikSCience Ocean Leadership recognition plaque.

The QuikSCience Partnership is collaboration between USC, the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies, Quiksilver and the Quiksilver Foundation. It holds an annual QuikSCience Challenge competition among school children. Its mission is to improve K-12 science education in America by using children's love of the ocean to make science more approachable.
