Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Concerning the RFA

1.  What is the relationship between the USC Emeriti Center (EC), the Emeriti Center College (ECC), the Retired Faculty Association (RFA), and the Staff Retirement Association (SRA)?

The USC Emeriti Center (EC) was established by and continues to have a small budget from the University to provide support to the entire USC Retiree Community of approximately 2,000 retirees.  It maintains retiree records, administers a number of USC benefit programs available to USC Retirees, publishes a quarterly newsletter for the entire retiree community, operates the Emeriti Center College, helps provide a number of programs for transitioning to retirement, and provides non-financial support to the RFA and the SRA.  It is located in Room 220 of the Gerontology building.  It has a full-time Executive Director (Janette Brown) and a small number of full- and part-time staff.  The Emeriti Center College (headed by Bob Scales) is operated by the Emeriti Center with support from the RFA and the SRA.  The RFA and the SRA are both member organizations that work with their respective communities (about a thousand persons each), collect dues to support their programs, and have Boards of Directors elected by their memberships.  Presently, Carole Gustin serves as the President of the SRA, and Bob Biller serves as the President of the RFA.  All four of these entities (the EC, the ECC, the RFA, and the SRA have active Web sites which can be found by going to the USC homepage and entering "Emeriti Center" in the search box at the top of the page.  That site provides links to each of the other three.

2.  Why do I get approached for contributions from both the Emeriti Center and from either the RFA or the SRA?

Both the RFA and the SRA receive no monetary support from the University and use dues and contributions from their members to provide the programs and services they offer.  These requests for SRA and RFA dues and contributions occur each spring, to support the work of the following fiscal year.  While the Emeriti Center receives some modest financial support from the University, it is not sufficient to cover the services and activities provided by the EC.  Therefore, an EC request for contributions occurs in the fall of each year.

3.  Have the RFA and the SRA each adopted a Constitution and By-Laws to govern their work, and how might I get a copy?

Yes.  The RFA has adopted both of these documents, and copies may be downloaded from their respective Web sites.  The SRA has adopted a constitution but not By-Laws.
