PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

First THANK YOU to our members for their generosity.  As of today (7/24/08), we have received $3,693 for our endowment and $740 as gifts to our regular accounts.  In September, we will forward the gift information to Restricted Gift Accounting and USC thank you notices will be sent.

If you haven't sent in your dues renewal (annual members), please do so.  Need a form?  Please let us know and we'll get one to you.  We are happy to continue accepting gifts, as well.

TWO NEW EC STAFF:  The Emeriti Center has two new staff.  One, Maricela Hinojosa is the new Jennifer.  Chris Curry fills a new position—Administrative Assistant/Receptionist—and sits in the front in Room 220.  He will support many of the new initiatives and help with reservations, etc.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

TROJAN ENCORE:  We are ready to launch this pilot program.  If you are interested in listing your resume/job skills on our Web page to be available for part-time and/or short-term positions at USC, please let me know.  I will be on campus Mondays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at 213-740-5256 or 213-740-8921.  You can e-mail me anytime.  I would be happy to walk you through the process to join our "ENCOREES."

STROKE WARNING SYMPTOMS

Only 44 percent of people could identify all five of the most common warning symptoms of a stroke in a recent U.S. Centers for Desease Control and Prevention survey.  The five symptoms are (all SUDDEN):

  1. confusion or trouble speaking
  2. numbness or weakness of the face, an arm, or a leg, especially on one side
  3. trouble seeing
  4. trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance
  5. severe headache with no known cause.

The least-recognized symptom was the sudden severe headache.  Call 911 immediately for anyone with even one of these symptoms.  (U.C. Berkeley Wellness Letter, August 2008)

CLASSIFIED ADS REMINDER

In January we inaugurated a new feature for this newsletter: free classified ads.  This is for anyone on the e-mail list to give something away, to trade something, to buy or to sell something—you get the idea.  The first ads appeared in February.

Now, six months later, only four individuals have taken advantage of the feature.  This makes us think that it hasn't been filling much of a need.  So, if no ads come in soon, there is a strong possibility that we'll drop the idea.

[To have your free ad appear in the next issue, please send to <len@winesland.net> before the first of the month.]

SOME INTERESTING (PERHAPS) BUT USELESS FACTS

· In most TV commercials that advertise milk, a mixture of white paint and thinner is used in place of milk.
· The first Harley Davidson motocycle, which was built in 1903, used a tomato can for a carburetor.
· Humphrey Bogart was related to Princess Diana.  They were seventh cousins.
· If coloring were not added to Coca-Cola, it would be green.
· George Washington grew marijuana in his garden.
· Chewing some gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying.
· Leonardo Da Vinci invented scissors.
· The name "Wendy" was made up for the book, Peter Pan.  The name never existed prior to that date.
· Guinness Book of Records holds the record for being the book most often stolen from public libraries.

A USC VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Friends and Neighbors Service Day is one of the USC Volunteer Center's most popular community service events.  The weekend before school begins, students, faculty, staff, and alumni have the opportunity to meet one another while serving the larger Los Angeles community.

Typically, participants meet in Alumni Park in the morning.  While a light breakfast is provided, they mingle with their fellow project participants and talk about the day's activities.  After brief remarks, we will send as many as 500 participants to 30 different service sites throughout the Los Angeles area to do hands-on work with local community organizations.

Everyone will enjoy lunch with their project team on site at some point during the work day.  Everyone will be back on campus by 3:00 p.m.

This year, projects include everything from landscaping and gardening, visiting with seniors, removing invasive plants along the Los Angeles River, to arts and crafts with children.

All USC students, alumni, faculty and staff are invited to attend these events!  We begin to register volunteers at the end of July and early part of August.  If you would like to be included on our mailing list or for more information, please contact:
