Faculty Women's Club of USC

In 1912, Emma Josephine Bradley Bovard - wife of then USC President George Finley Bovard - helped to establish a separate Faculty Wives' Club, at a time when there were few women faculty on campus. Mrs. Bovard was the Club's President until 1921, followed by Mrs. Rufus B. von KleinSmid, (1922 -1934), when she became the Honorary President, a title still held by the President's wife.

In 1995, the Club's name was changed to the Faculty Women's Club, in keeping with the growing presence of women in academic and management capacities on the USC campus. The membership is open to USC faculty women, faculty wives and professional women.

Purposes of the Faculty Women's Club

The Faculty Women's Club aims to:

  • Further the spirit of interdisciplinary collegiality among women associated with the USC family.
  • Support the Faculty Women's Club Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund managed by Town & Gown.
  • Stimulate awareness of the intellectual and cultural growth within the University and the community.
  • Support and participate in the USC Office of International Services (OIS) program to teach English language and customs to international students and their spouses.
  • Sponsor the Emma Josephine Bradley Bovard Award given to the senior woman, or women, with the highest grade point average. Their names are added each year to the Wall of Scholars in Leavey Library.
