3.20 The Brain Society Event
The International Brain Mapping and Intra-operative Surgical Planning Society-USC Chapter
(also known as the Brain Society) is holding an event featuring Dr. James Weiland and the
Doheny Vision Research Center. Dr. Weiland is the Retinal Prosthesis Testbed Leader at the
Biomimetic MicroElectronic Systems Engineering Research Center at the USC Health Sciences
Campus. This is a great opportunity to hear about the prosthesis first-hand and to see
the center where such eye-opening (pun intended) research takes place! Time: 4-6 PM
Location: DVRC Auditorium, HSC. FREE FOOD! There are a couple of options for
transportation to HSC and back. Easiest would be to take the intercampus shuttle that
leaves every half hour from UPC to HSC and back. It departs from the 1) JEP house and 2)
34th Street and McClintock and will drop you off right opposite DVRC itself. I would
suggest taking the 3:45 PM tram. On the return trip, the tram departs HSC at 6:15 PM. We
are also providing limited transportation by carpool. If you would like to do this,
please email me back ASAP since spots are limited. Contact Info: Raj Khalsa (President,
IBMISPS-USC). E-mail: bkhalsa@usc.edu

3.21 When Art and Medicine Converge at USC Fisher Gallery
What do medicine and art have in common? What is an artist doing in a medical school? Why
are medical students encouraged to cultivate their creative and artistic side? Why do
physicians-to-be create and exhibit art? Artist Joyce Cutler-Shaw, Pamela Schaff, MD, and
Robert Tager, MD will address the convergence of medicine and art in a discussion
moderated by KCRW's art critic Edward Goldman.
