2.15 Alternative Careers in Neuroscience Dinner

6:00-9:00 pm at HNB 107
One goal of a neuroscience graduate program is to produce highly skilled researchers. Yet, the number of trained PhDs greatly outweighs available research positions within the academic world. Given these current circumstances, it is essential that graduate students are well informed of non-traditional job opportunities in the field of neuroscience. The aim of our dinner symposium is to connect graduate students with invited speakers that represent a wide range of professions—from law, to science writing, to industrial research—all associated with neuroscience. A “Q & A” panel will allow students to gain detailed information about these careers, while the dinner will provide students the chance to mingle and network with potential employers and colleagues. For more information please contact Christina Neuner at neuner@usc.edu

2.12 Islam's Role in the Terror War on America
by Elan Journo. Mon, Feb. 12 7:30 PM SGM-123
Sponsored by The USC Objectivist Club. www.uscobjectivistclub.com
What motivated the slaughter of Americans on 9/11? What drives terrorism against America and the West? Experts and politicians insist that Islam is more-or-less irrelevant in explaining the terrorists’ actions. But that is wrong, Elan Journo of the Ayn Rand Institute will argue; the terrorists are motivated by their principled embrace of Islam. By considering the religion’s central tenets--understood as the vast majority of Muslims understand and practice them--we can see how faith in Islam leads many Muslims to initiate aggression against the "infidel" West. This truth--however unpleasant it may be to some--has crucial implications for which regimes to target in the war and how properly to defeat the enemy.

Have an idea and don't know what to do? Interested in the "do's and don'ts" of innovation? Want to know more about the innovation resources available from the USC? Many inventors fail to realize how important it is to protect their work in order to receive funding as a start up. Protecting ideas is usually a requirement to successfully moving an innovation to market. Krisztina Holly provides an overview on USC Stevens, hosts an interactive discussion on innovation programs and answers your questions on starting your own company or licensing your innovation. Bring all your questions! Did you know? University start-ups are 100 times more likely to go public than the average U.S. start-up. Over the last 10 years, USC has produced 63 start-ups from technology licenses alone!

Thursday, February 15 - 6:30 pm to 8 pm - Upstairs Café Garden Dining Room
Prominent lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Black activists, writers, educators and innovators have been present in every progressive and significant movement in African American History. Central to this presence has been the creative contributions of Black Queer artists, who have provided the drumbeat for the march of progress. Furthermore, the presence of Black Queer communities has been significant in the larger LGBTQ movement. We will explore Black LGBTQ contributions since the 1800s with a special emphasis on artistic contributions. We will also discuss methods and inroads for young, black queer artists, and speak with those who represent the new face of artistic expression in our community. Light appetizers and refreshments provided.
