Yong-Ok Park

Professor and Director, Institute for Diplomacy and Security Studies of Hallym University
former Vice Minister of National Defense (retired Lieutenant General of the Army)

Dr. Yong-Ok PARK, a former vice minister of national defense, is currently working as a professor and director of the Institute for Diplomacy and Security Studies of Hallym University. He graduated from Korea Military Academy in 1965 and, after 33 years on active duty, retired as Lieutenant General of Army in 1998.

His educational background includes a BS from the Korea Military Academy in 1965, a BS in Mathematics from Seoul National University in 1969, an MA in Public Administration at Seoul National University in 1971 and his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Hawaii in 1975. He spent one year at The RAND Corporation as Visiting Researcher (1984-85).

His key military and government assignments include:
Professor at Korea Military Academy (1975-1981) and National Defense University (1981-1988); Director-General of the Arms Control Bureau of Defense Ministry (1991-1993); Defense Attaché at the Korean Embassy in the United States (1994-1995); and Assistant Defense Minister(1995-1998). After retirement from the military in 1998, he had served as Deputy Secretary-General for the National Security Council until he was appointed as Vice Minister of National Defense in 1999.
