Awards for Excellence in Mentoring
For Faculty and Graduate Students

Purpose
Up to 20 awards of $1,000 will be presented to faculty members and graduate students who demonstrate effective mentoring by guiding and nurturing collegial and professional development. The awards seek to recognize those who go out of their way to mentor. In addition to honoring individuals for their concerns for students and faculty, the awards serve to highlight these mentors as role models for the entire campus community.
Categories for Nomination
Award nominees must fit into one of four categories. A person may be nominated in more than one category using separate nominations.
- Faculty mentoring faculty
- Faculty mentoring graduate student
- Faculty mentoring undergraduate student
- Graduate student mentoring undergraduate student
Criteria for Award
The sole criterion for the award is excellence in mentoring. The following, in no particular order of importance, are just some of the qualities which can contribute to good mentoring and may assist you in completing your nomination form. A nominee need not have all the qualities.
- Provides intellectual leadership
- Respects protege's goals and assists him/her to work towards them
- Is supportive at personal as well as professional level
- Clearly articulates expectations and holds protege to high standards
- Seeks financial support for protege's graduate study and research
- Involves protege in teaching and research
- Is accessible for advice and assistance
- Involves protege in professional conferences
- Involves protege in publications
- Assists protege to overcome problems, barriers, misunderstandings, discord
- Provides a good role model of professionalism
- Assists in establishing a network with professionals and faculty
- Assists in career preparation, development, and/or post-degree employment
- Advocates and guides in administrative, organizational and ethical matters
- Shows concern for protege as a person and supports his/her personal development
Eligibility
Eligibility for the award is open to all USC faculty (regardless of status or longevity) and graduate students.
Nomination

- The nominator must have been mentored by the nominee.
- Each nominator should solicit up to three additional letters of support (to be included with the nomination statement).

Selection and Award
A subcommittee from the Mellon Mentoring Steering Committee will serve as the Mentor Recognition Awards Committee.
