USC wins workplace best practices award
The American Psychological Association has selected USC as one of nine organizations, nationwide, to receive “Best Practices Honors” for a program that meets the unique needs of employees. USC’s Center for Work and Family Life was named as a model employee program, and the university is being recognized for its vision and leadership in developing the Center, whose mission includes fostering a psychologically and socially healthy workforce and culture.

USC's Center for Work & Family Life Receives Best Practices Honor from American Psychological Association
The University of Southern California was presented with a Best Practices Honor from the American Psychological Association (APA) at the annual Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards ceremony held March 9 in Washington, D.C. The University of Southern California was recognized for its Center for Work and Family Life that helps the university community successfully address work-life challenges. The Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award is a national honors program recognizing innovative programs and policies that facilitate a psychologically healthy workplace.
The University of Southern California has shown its commitment to employees by building and maintaining the Center for Work and Family Life that offers an array of services including counseling, stress assessments, referrals for dependent care and much more. In addition, the university’s Healthy Trojan website features campus resources dedicated to enhancing psychological, emotional, intellectual and social wellness. These practices are examples of a health and safety initiative, one component of a psychologically healthy workplace.
The University of Southern California was one of nine organizations to receive the Best Practices recognition in 2013. The organization is a previous winner of the California Psychological Association’s state-level Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award in 2012, qualifying it to be nominated for APA’s Best Practices Honors.

The Center’s executive director John Gaspari, who will travel to Washington, DC to accept the award this weekend, says healthy relationships are at the heart of the Center’s objectives. “The work we do can be compared to interstitial fluid – the substance that exists in the pore spaces between every cell of your body,” he notes. “It’s not glamorous, but without it our tissues would dry up! Likewise, we provide a medium that supports the cells who do the mission-critical work of the university – and I believe relationships are the medium through which the best work gets done.”
John was joined at the awards ceremony by CWFL Assistant Director Linda Snouffer, LCSW, who made remarkable contributions towards collecting data, compiling documentation, and writing the grants for both the state award in 2012 and the national award in 2013.
The pursuit of wellness has long been embraced by the university’s leadership through a series of campus-wide initiatives, wellness resources added to individual school websites and support for flexible work hours, caregiver assistance and many other programs and policies.

The Best Practices Honors is a national recognition that highlights those local Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award winners with a single program or policy that contributes to a psychologically healthy work environment and meets the unique needs of the organization and its employees. Nominees come from a pool of previous local winners and are selected through a competitive evaluation and judging process.
