Adult Children of Alcoholics is a Twelve Step, Twelve Tradition program of women and men who grew up in alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional homes.

Alanon and AlateenAl-Anon , which includes Alateen for younger members, has been offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics.

Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

Alcohólicos Anónimos (AA) outreach and support for speakers of Spanish. An international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem; it is nonprofessional, self-supporting, nondenominational, multiracial, apolitical, self-help group open to anyone who wants to do something about their drinking problem.

Cocaine Anonymous are men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from their addiction. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances.

Dual Recovery Anonymous is an independent, twelve-step, self-help organization for people with a dual diagnosis of chemically dependence and an emotional or psychiatric illness. Addresses how both illnesses affect all areas of life.

Marijuana Anonymous primary purpose is to stay free of marijuana and to help the marijuana addict who still suffers achieve the same freedom. They do this by practicing their suggested twelve steps of recovery and by being guided as a group by their twelve traditions.

Narcotics Anonymous helps men and women for whom Drugs has become a major problem. Their concern is what addicts want to do about their problem and how they can help.

Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids.

Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers provides a list of detox inpatient for centers for people of limited means.

SCA Sexual Compulsive helps others to recover from sexual compulsion. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop having compulsive sex.

Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH) offers hope and valuable resources to those seeking information about sexual addiction.

Women for Sobriety is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women overcome alcoholism and other addictions. Their "New Life" program helps achieve sobriety and sustain ongoing recovery.

Anger Management

American Psychological Association provides information about anger, including how anger is expressed and tips for controlling it.

Mental Health America is a mental health information and referral service for a broad range of local services and support groups, including anger. It also provides literature on various mental health issues.

Child Abuse Prevention

The California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare (CEBC) provides child welfare professionals with easy access to vital information about selected child welfare related programs.

Child Welfare Information Gateway connects child welfare and related professionals to comprehensive information and resources to help protect children and strengthen families. Topics from prevention to permanency, including child abuse and neglect, foster care, and adoption are covered.

Child Care

ChildCareAware provides referrals to local child care providers, information on state licensing requirements and information on availability of child care subsidies.

Connection for Children refers parents to licensed preschools and / or home based child care centers in West Los Angeles.

Crystal Stairs refers parents to licensed preschools and / or home based child care centers in South Los Angeles.

Pathways refers parents to licensed preschools and / or home-based child care centers in West Hollywood and Echo Park.

Sittercity is a commercial enterprise that has a database for babysitters, nannies and pet sitters. Sittercity serves the entire LA area and most of Southern California. Sittercity does not screen sitters, but for a fee they will do a background check.

Trustline is a database of nannies and baby-sitters that have cleared criminal background checks in California. It is a screening program of in-home caregivers in the state with access to fingerprint records at the California Department of Justice and the FBI.

Depression and Anxiety

The Anxiety Disorders Guide helps to indentify symptoms of anxiety, explain the causes, and describe treatments.

The Anxiety Network provides information and help for three major disorders, social anxiety, panic and generalized anxiety.

The Depression and Bipoloar Support Alliance provides up-to-date tools and information about the impact and management of these illnesses.

The National Institute of Mental Health Depression Page is a detailed booklet that describes symptoms, causes, and treatments, with information on getting help and coping. The entire booklet may be downloaded or read online.

Partnership for Workplace Mental Health provides information on anxiety and depression, in addtion to other mental health concerns.

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) is a lifelong resource, support network and advocate for listening, learning, talking and living independently with hearing loss.

The American With Disabilities Act website provides comprehensive information about ADA.

The mission of ADDA (Attention Deficit Disorder Association) is to provide information, resources and networking to adults with AD/HD and to the professionals who work with them

ADHD Help line provides the latest information from leading experts for ADHD, ADD, learning disabilities and other behavioral disorders. Books, videos, audios and resource building materials for adults and children alike are offered(www.addhelpline.org).

CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is the nation's leading non-profit organization serving individuals with AD/HD and their families. CHADD has over 16,000 members in 200 local chapters throughout the U.S. Chapters offer support for individuals, parents, teachers, professionals, and other organizations.

Disability World is a unique international online magazine (e-zine), dedicated to advancing an exchange of information and expertise about the international independent living movement of people with disabilities

LD OnLine offers hundreds of articles and resources for educators, parents, and others concerned about children and adults with learning disabilities and ADHD.

Lighthouse International is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to preserving vision and helping people of all ages overcome the challenges of vision loss through clinical services, education, research, and advocacy.

The National Braille Press is a nonprofit braille printer and publisher offering braille books, magazines, textbooks, tests, and customized embossing services.

The The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) works to ensure that children, adolescents and adults with learning disabilities have every opportunity to succeed in school, work and life.

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) administers a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible borrowers in the United States by postage-free mail.

Domestic Violence

California Courts Self-Help Center provides free and low-cost legal help in domestic violence cases, resources to help children and teens, and guides to help you apply for a restraining order or respond to a request for a restraining order.

California Partnership to End Domestic Violence acts as a "catalyst for innovative, long-range plans to end domestic violence." This site also provides a list of crisis centers, victim resources and safety information.

The Family Violence Prevention Fund develops strategies, programs, and resources to stop family violence. Its Web site offers a news desk and prevention toolkits and information on FVPF's programs and services in public education, child welfare, immigration, public health, and criminal justice.

The National Coalition Againist Domestic Violence (NCADV) is a grassroots membership organization providing technical assistance, networking, and support to programs and state coalitions serving battered women and their children. It also provides information and referrals to the general public and the media

MenWeb provides resource information about and for battered men.

Stop Abuse For Everyone (SAFE) provides online support groups, online resources, brochures and publications for underserved domestic violence groups.

Women Against Domestic Violence: Male Abuse provides resources and information about domestic male abuse.

Women'sLaw.org provides easy-to-understand legal information (it is not legal advice) and resources to women living with or escaping domestic violence.

Eating Disorders

"Dying to be Thin", broadcast on NOVA in December 2000, explores anorexia and bulimia.

American Dietetic Assocation is an organization of food and nutrition professionals that promote optimal nutrition, health and well-being.

Eating Disorders Anonymous (EDA) are individuals sharing their experience, insights and widsom with each other to recover from eating disorders.

The ANAD assist individuals and their families with finding resources and information about eating disorders. They also provide referrals to support groups, help find therapists and answer calls to their hotline.

MedlinePlus:Eating Disorders provides information and explanations about eating disorders.

National Eating Disorders Association is a nonprofit organization working to prevent eating disorders and provide treatment referrals to those suffering from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder and those concerned with body image and weight issues.

Aging

AARP is a nonprofit membership organization for persons 50 years and older dedicated to addressing their needs and interest.

American Geriatrics Association is a nonprofit professional organization of health care providers. The site includes membership, educational and publication materials.

American Society on Aging seeks to enhance the knowledge and skills of those who want to improve the quality of life of older adults and their families.

National Consumers Voice for Quality Long-Term Care is a consumer advocacy group that educates consumers on how to get good care in nursing homes.

  • Guide to Choosing a Nursing Home
    This guide provides tools that can be used by family members who are searching for a facility.
  • Nursing Home Compare - This tool on the Medicare website displays quality measure data, deficiencies and other information about nursing homes. It is organized by state and county to help you search for facilities near you or anywhere in the country.
  • National Council on the Aging helps older people remain healthy and independent, find jobs, and increase access to benefit programs. This site also includes a resource section called My Medicare Matters.

    National Senior Citizens Law Center focuses on the two most fundamental issues facing elderly and disabled people: maintaining a basic level of income and having access to health care.

    Aging in Place

    Fall Prevention Center of Excellence identifies strategies that can help prevent serious injuries due to falls in the home and the community.

    Home Modification Action Project provides information and referral for home modifications and repair to adapt homes to a seniors changing needs.

    The USC Home Visit Program allows Univerisity of Southern California geriatric specialists to bring crucial medical care to homebound seniors, who find visiting a physician’s clinic a strenuous physical challenge. At the patient’s request, a geriatrician and a geriatric nurse specialist will visit the patient’s home, manage medical issues, call-in pharmacy prescriptions, obtain blood samples for testing, coordinate care with a home health agency, assess home safety, help obtain in-home supportive services, and much more. This team of specialists is supported by a full staff of dedicated medical professionals.

    In Home Supportive Services is a state funded program that helps low-income seniors and those who are blind or disabled stay in their homes by paying for in-home services such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, shopping and personal care.

    National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) is a professional organization representing a variety of agencies providing home care services, including home health agencies, hospice programs, and homemaker / home health aid agencies. Material on how to select a home care agency is available.

    The American Hospice Foundation supports programs that serve the needs of terminally ill and grieving individuals of all ages.

    Arch National Respite Network and Resource Center supports service providers and families through training, technical assistance, evaluation and research.

    CareFinder is the Alzheimer's Association's online tool to help those affected by Alzheimer's disease find care in their community.

    Children of Aging Parents is a nonprofit organization that assist caregivers with information, referrals and support.

    Elder Care Online provides information, education and support to caregivers, especially those coping with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias.

    Eldercare Locator provides resource and support information to help older people live independently in their and safely in their homes for as long as possible.

    Family Caregiving 101 provides caregivers with basic tools, skills and information to provide quality care for a loved one, protecting their own mental and physical wellbeing.

    Family Caregiving Alliance (FCA): National Center on Caregiving offers support to caregivers providing long-term care at home to a loved one. Programs at the national, state and local level are provided.

    Tingstad Older Adult Counseling Center provides seniors and their families with testing and assessment, individual, couple and family therapy, in addition to counseling families and caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

    American Association of Homes and Services for the Aged represents nonprofit housing facilities for seniors. The website provides tips on how to selcet a facility and a searchable directrory of it's membership.

    Benefits Checkup helps seniors with limited income find programs that may help pay for prescription drugs, utilities, health care and other essential items or services.

    California Assitive Technology Network promotes access to assistive technologies, related services, and information to enable people with disabilities to be successful, independent and productive.

    Eldercare Locator provides resource and support information to help older people live independently in their and safely in their homes for as long as possible.

    Home Care and Hospice Agency Locator is a comprehensive database of home care and hospice agencies. Use this resource to find the agencies in any particular area of the country.

    Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center offers resources, information support groups, family consultations etc. to caregivers living in Los Angeles County who care for an adult with brain impariment at home.

    National Academy of Elder Law Attorney defines the scope of elder law and gives the latest news about legal issues affecting the elderly. Includes a search for elder law attorneys near you.

    National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers is a nonprofit professional organization of health and human services specialists, Professional Geriatric Care Managers, who help families care for older relatives, while encouraging as much independence as possible.     Medicare.gov is the official U.S. government site for people with Medicare. This site includes the online tool Nursing Home Compare. It can provide detailed information about the past performance of every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home in the country.

    Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage provides basic information about Medicare prescription drug coverage, what it is, who can get it, when you can get it, how you can get it and why you should get it. This site includes the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder, an interactive tool that allows you to narrow your search for a Medicare prescription drug plan based on your personal preferences such as cost, drugs covered and participating pharmacies.

    Multipurpose Centers offers a broad range of services and programs that typically include resource and referral assistance.

    The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging coordinates and supports a wide range of home and community based services, including information and referral, home-delivered and congregate meals, transportation, employment services, senior centers, adult day care and long-term care ombudsman programs.

    Transportation

    Access Paratransit is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandated public transportation for people unable, due to a disability, to use accessible bus or train services in Los Angeles County. Access Paratransit is a curb-to-curb shared-ride service. It is not cab service, emergency medical or social service transportation, and is not door-to-door or a private transportation service. Several riders may be transported at one time in the same vehicle and fares are collected.

    City Ride is designed to serve the senior and mobility impaired citizens of Los Angeles. Those that are eligible can purchase Metro passes, taxi rides, and/or dial-a-ride trips at a substantial discount.

    Alternatives to Marriage Project is geared towards unmarried people, including those who are single, choose not to marry, cannot marry, or live together.

    COLAGE is targeted to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgener parents, children and families.

    The Council on Contemporary Families is a nonprofit organization that wants more accurate information about the condition of America's families and a more humane and sensitive discussion of the larger social, legal, cultural, and psychological issues that are often simplified under the rubric of "family values." They seek to meet this need through the dissemination of educational materials, media coverage, conferences, and seminars.

    Families Worldwide is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening families through traditional value-based programs.

    Great Schools provides parental public and private school ratings, tips on choosing a school, and more.

    National Family Resiliency Center (NFRC) is an organization dedicated to helping people adjust to separation, divorce and remarriage.

    LACFLA: Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Association humanizes the divorce process by using while still protecting the legal and financial interests of clients, which helps to protect the well-being of the client and their children.

    Parenthood offers online parenting resources with informative articles on raising a happy, healthy child from conception to graduation. It also has information on getting pregnant, estimating a baby's due date, calculating the cost of raising a child, and choosing names for a baby.

    Parenting.org answers parenting questions by providing resources and guidance on how to successfully raise, praise, discipline, teach and love a child.

    Parents Without Partners offers single parents and their children a supportive environment of friendship and the exchange of parenting techniques.

    National Association of Therapeutic Schools & Programs (NATSAP) is an organization of schools, residential treatment centers, wilderness programs, and similar resources for young people with behavioral difficulties.

    School Match is a research and database service company that collects, audits, integrates, processes and manages information about public and private elementary and secondary schools.

    WeConnect is a public/private partnershipdesigned to help California's working families become more financially secure by connecting them to important programs and resources. The site serves as a one-stop-shop connecting Californians to programs and services they may be eligible for.

    Changing Your Life Through Better Money Management provides personal financial planning tips and information and concrete advice on how to manage money. Created through a collaboration of the Community Action Partnership™ and the National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®), the site can be used both by individuals who want to create a better life for themselves as well as by Community Action Agency case workers.

    Managing Debt and Credit Counseling

    U.S. Trustee Program, Department of Justice website can help with selecting approved credit counseling agencies. It also provides "Facts for Consumers," helpful suggestions regarding mortgages or finding housing and credit counseling. The brochure "Before You File for Personal Bankruptcy: Information About Credit Counseling and Debtor Education," is also useful.

    SafeBorrowing.com, created by the American Bar Association, provides tools that help with financial success. The website covers four basic types of consumer credit: financing your home, financing your car, financing your education, and credit cards.

    U.S. Trustee Program, Department of Justice Credit Counseling & Debtor Education provides information on how to select an approved credit counseling agency.

    Making Home Affordable provides information about refinancing and loan modifications under the Home Affordable Refinance Program.

    Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in California provides links to housing news; information about home owning, buying, renting and financing; community data; how to work with HUD; a resource library. Information on avoiding foreclosure is also available.

     

    California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) supports the needs of renters and first-time homebuyers by providing financing and programs that create safe, decent and affordable housing opportunities for individuals within specified income ranges. It is the State’s affordable housing bank and makes low interest rate loans through the sale of tax-exempt bonds. A completely self-supporting State agency, bonds are repaid by revenues generated through mortgage loans, not taxpayer dollars.

    Consumer Home Mortage Information provides helpful mortgage resource information and links for those considering buying a home, already own a home, or have a mortgage and may be experiencing difficulty in keeping payments current.

    Saving for College

    The US Department for Education website explores a variety of options that help pay for college, including loans, grants, and work-study.

    The College Savings Plans Network is a national non-profit association dedicated to making college more accessible and affordable for families. This site provides information about 529 college savings plans and allows you to compare plans from around the country.

    Building Assets

    Building Wealth provides personal finance education resource information to help young people, adult consumers, families and others develop a plan for building personal wealth. It presents an overview of personal wealth-building strategies that includes setting financial goals, budgeting, saving and investing, managing debt, and understanding credit reports and credit scores.

    The Investors Clearinghouse, sponsored by the Alliance for Investor Education, provides information about investing, investments and financial markets for current and prospective investors of all ages. The organization pursues initiatives for education and joins with others to motivate Americans to obtain objective information and increase their knowledge and understanding of investing.

    Office of Financial Education (U. S. Treasury – Office of Domestic Finance) is comprised of materials that provide resources on financial literacy to the general public.

    Treasury Direct presents overviews regarding U.S. Treasury bonds, notes, bills, and TIPS. Also, you can obtain basic information about the different types of savings bonds, including EE/E, I and HH/H bonds.

    Health Resources

    The ALS Association (ALSA) is the only national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. ALSA coversl all bases - research, patient and community services, public education, and advocacy. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and to find a cure for it.

    The Alzheimer's Association seeks to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Their website provides a plethora of resource information, including housing options, the right care options, and community programs and support services.

    The American Hospice Foundation supports programs that serve the needs of terminally ill and grieving individuals of all ages.

    The American Lung Association, the nation's oldest voluntary public health organization, works to prevent lung disease and promote lung health with research for cures, advocacy to improve air quality and education to help sufferers and caregivers manage their chronic lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

    The Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation is an advocacy and support organization for patients with bone marrow diseases. Their services are free.

    The ARCH National Respite Network can offer temporary relief for caregivers and families who are caring for those with disabilities, chronic or terminal illnesses, and the elderly. This program is a national network of respite and crisis care programs. A national respite location service, guides for starting respite programs in communities,and fact sheets on a variety of topics related to respite and crisis care may be found on this website.

    The Blood & Marrow Transplant Information Network (BMT Infonet) strives to provide high quality medical information in easy-to-understand language, so that patients can be active, knowledgeable participants in their health care planning and treatment. In addition to publications, BMT InfoNet offers patients and survivors emotional support.

    The Breast Cancer Network of Strength, formerly known as Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization®, provides immediate emotional relief to anyone affected by breast cancer. Their mission is to ensure, through information, empowerment and peer support, that no one faces breast cancer alone. The organization raises money to fund YourShoes, a Breast Cancer Network of Strength peer support program that includes a 24/7 breast cancer support center staffed by trained breast cancer survivors providing peer support through a toll-free hotline, e-mail, support groups, outreach programs, breast health awareness workshops, wigs and prostheses banks for women with limited resources, and advocacy on breast cancer related policies.

    The Cleaning for A Reason Foundation offers free professional housecleaning, and maid services to improve the lives of women undergoing treatment for cancer - any type of cancer.
