A Statement from USC President
Steven B. Sample

As the crisis in the Gulf Coast states continues, I want to let you know how the USC community has been affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and to give you an update on the ways Trojans are responding.

About 200 USC students, both graduate and undergraduate, have homes and family in the regions hit by Katrina.  All of our students are safe, but of course each of them is experiencing loss and upheaval in differing degrees. Our Office of Student Affairs is directly helping those in immediate need, whether it be financial, emotional, or logistical.  Many staff and faculty members, as well as alumni, also have loved ones in the devastated areas, and we are determining how best to assist them. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who are suffering personally from this dreadful event.

The Trojan community has responded with its characteristic compassion and resourcefulness to the catastrophe. We have organized relief efforts and events over the next few days. In addition, although we are three weeks into the first semester, we will accommodate up to approximately 100 academically prepared students from universities and colleges affected by the disaster who need to attend classes temporarily at USC while they are waiting for their own colleges to reopen. To learn more about USC’s actions to help those in need, see Information for Displaced Students.

I want to commend the USC students, faculty, and staff who have so quickly, deftly, and caringly organized these relief efforts.  This is true Trojan Spirit in action.
