	Bioengineering Approaches to Energy Balance and Obesity Five NIH institutes, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Cancer Institute, and National Institute on Aging, have issued a joint announcement for small business grants. Projects are sought that will develop and validate new and innovative bioengineering technology to address clinical problems related to energy balance, intake, and expenditure. Eligible doctoral degrees include, but are not limited to, the following: D.M.D., D.C., D.O., D.V.M., O.D., D.P.M., Sc.D., Eng.D., Dr. P.H., D.N.Sc., Pharm.D., N.D. (Doctor of Naturopathy), D.S.W., Psy.D, as well as a doctoral degree in nursing research or practice. A Kirschstein NRSA-Institutional Research training application may include a request for short-term positions reserved specifically to provide full-time health-related research training experiences during the summer or other “off-quarter” period. Such positions are limited to medical students, dental students, students in other health-professional programs, and graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences. To be eligible for short-term predoctoral research training positions, students must be enrolled and in good standing and must have completed at least one quarter in a program leading to a clinical doctorate or a masters or doctorate in a quantitative science such as physics, mathematics, or engineering prior to participating in the program. FUNDING Institutional NRSA research training grants (T32) may be made for periods up to five years. Trainee appointments are normally made in twelve-month increments. Short -term positions can support individuals for a period at least eight, but no more than twelve weeks in a grant year. No trainee may be appointed for less than nine months during the initial period of appointment, except with prior approval. No individual trainee may receive more than five years of aggregate NRSA support at the predoctoral level or three years of support at the postdoctoral level, including any combination of support from institutional training grants and individual fellowship awards. Any extensions require approval. A stipend is provided as a subsistence allowance to help trainees defray living expenses during the research training experience. For postdoctoral trainees the appropriate stipend level is based on the number of full years of relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment. The NIH will offset the combined cost of tuition, fees, and health insurance (either self-only or family as appropriate) at the following rate: one hundred percent of all costs up to $3,000 and sixty percent of costs above $3,000. Trainee travel, including attendance at scientific meetings that the institution determines to be necessary to the individual's research training, is an allowable trainee expense. In addition, support for travel to a research training experience away from the institution may be permitted. The applicant institution may request the NIH standard NRSA Training Related Expenses (FY 2006, $2,200 annually for each predoctoral trainee and $3,850 annually for each postdoctoral trainee) to help defray other research training expenses, such as staff salaries, consultant costs, equipment, research supplies, and faculty/staff travel directly related to the research training program. Funding for short-term training is prorated, based on the allowed annual amounts for stipends and training related expenses. A facilities and administrative allowance (indirect cost allowance) based on eight percent of total allowable direct costs (this excludes amounts for tuition, fees, health insurance, and equipment) may be requested. Applications from state and local government agencies may request full indirect cost reimbursement. The grantee institution is allowed to provide funds to an individual in addition to the stipends paid by the NIH. Supplementation or additional support to offset the cost of living may be provided by the grantee institution. An institution may provide additional funds to a trainee in the form of compensation (as salary and/or tuition remission) for services such as teaching or serving as a research assistant. The focus of the proposed research must be on processes of aging and/or age-related changes, i.e., research proposed in applications responding to this PA must have clear relevance to aging. Potential topic areas of interest to the NIA include, but are not limited to, the following: Age-changes in levels, sensitivity, and gene expression activation profiles of NRs and co-regulators, and their effects on processes of aging (e.g., age-changes in tissue function, inflammation, glucose and lipid metabolism, adipogenesis, muscle, and brain function) and connections with disease processes for diseases common in older individuals. Modification of lifespan in model organisms (e.g., the NR homologue DAF-12 in the insulin-IGF-like pathway in the nematode, and mammalian homologues) and the health-protecting, life-extending effects of caloric restriction or other life-span altering genetic mutations or transgenic models in mammalian organisms. Age-changes in steroid metabolism or in tissue sensitivity and/or response to exogenous sex steroid (or tissue-selective sex steroid receptor modulators) therapy in middle- and old-age. NIDDK is primarily interested in the underlying mechanisms of action of nuclear receptors, coregulators, as they may affect diseases/conditions often seen in an aging population, including type 2 diabetes and obesity. NCI is interested in understanding the role of nuclear hormone receptor superfamily as well as the orphan nuclear receptors, their coactivators/corepressors, in a number of human malignancies such as thyroid, lung, colon, pancreas, endometrium, ovary, breast and prostate. Areas of high cancer relevance include: understanding the role of the coregulators in regulating transcription by modifying chromatin and/or associated proteins, influencing epithelial-stromal interactions during cancer progression, contributing to hormone resistance, as well as in determining therapeutic response. NIEHS is primarily interested in: age changes in levels, sensitivity, and gene expression activation profiles of NRs and coregulators as stimulated by endogenous activators or environmental chemicals with endocrine activity; or tissue-selective sex steroid receptor modulators including environmental agents with hormonal activity. 	Federal Biomedical Research in Transition: National Institutes of Health Adopts Careful Approaches in Context of Fiscal Realities for FY2006 and FY2007 The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is facing unprecedented challenges as it struggles to sustain the biomedical research enterprise with the needed new initiatives at a time of rapid discovery. Because NIH anticipates, at best, a flat funding level for FY2007, its fiscal prudence is evident in recently announced initiatives. Research programs are being reconfigured, with careful selection (or elimination) of funding mechanisms to assure maintenance of viability in critical areas. NIH Roadmap concepts and principles are becoming more integrated into individual institute solicitations that are synergistic with Roadmap-specific funding opportunities; institutes are increasingly collaborating with one another, with other federal agencies, and with the private sector. Because NIH is not expanding its portfolio of large ticket funding mechanisms (such as centers, program projects, and large resource grants), there is evidence that individual institutes are rethinking their funding strategies. For example, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke announced in August that it will not accept new or amended core center grants (P30) and plans for future support are not certain (see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice- files/NOT-NS-06-016.html). The National Eye Institute has reconfigured its support of clinical study planning grants (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-EY-06-005.html.) And, NIH has increased use of formal “Requests for Information” to assist its decision-making on both scientific directions and administrative processes; this document contains several examples. (The research community should take advantage of these excellent opportunities to provide advice to NIH.) Potential applicants are exhorted more than ever before to engage in “preapplication consultation” with grant portfolio managers prior to submission of grant applications. To stimulate new or needed areas of endeavor or to reinvigorate ongoing programs under current fiscal constraints, the prime strategy now appears to be coupled initiatives for support of research projects (R01), exploratory or developmental awards (R21), small grants (R03), and in some cases, small business awards (SBIR, STTR). This document provides a number of examples in that regard, particularly in the “Models, Materials, and Methods” and “Diabetes and Obesity” sections. The “Bioengineering” section provides examples in which multidisciplinary programs are being driven via the research project grant (R01) mechanism. NIH has also approached its static funding levels for training grants and fellowships by imposing more fiscal restraints. The “Pre- and Postdoctoral Training” section describes the latest fellowship reimbursement levels from NIH, as well as two new training programs for underrepresented populations and for behavioral scientists. As part of the government-wide initiative, NIH continues its transition to a fully electronic grants submission process. The use of the old PHS 398 application form is being phased out with the implementation of the SF-424 form in a mechanism-by-mechanism approach (as noted in a reminder notice issued by NIH in late June at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice- files/NOT-OD-06-079.html). Some funding opportunities highlighted in this document provide examples of that ongoing implementation, as well as pilot implementation of the multiple principal investigator policy (http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/multi_pi/). Exfoliated Cells and Circulating DNA in Cancer Detection and Diagnosis The National Cancer Institute has expanded its funding opportunities to develop novel technologies for capturing, enriching, and preserving exfoliated abnormal cells and macromolecules in body fluids or effusions and to develop methods for concentrating the tumor- derived subcellular material for use in biomarker studies. In body fluids, such as sputum, exfoliated tumor cells are a minor component compared to normal cells. As a result, the detection of exfoliated abnormal cells by routine cytopathology is often limited by the small number of atypical cells present in a given specimen. New enrichment methods are necessary to facilitate the detection of small numbers of exfoliated tumor cells and tumor- derived sub-cellular materials in biological fluids. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA) program, NIH has announced a change in policy for tuition, fees, and health insurance costs. These changes will begin in fiscal year FY 2007 for both newly awarded NRSAs and for noncompeting institutional NRSAs. A summary of the changes follows. For institutional training grants: • Tuition and fees: An amount per predoctoral trainee equal to 60 percent of the level requested by the applicant institution, up to $16,000 per year, will be provided. For combined dual-degree training (e.g. M.D-Ph.D./ D.D.S.-Ph.D.), up to $21,000 will be provided. For postdoctoral trainees, 60 percent of the level requested, up to $4500 per year, will be provided. • Training related expenses: Health insurance is an allowable expense. An additional $2000 per predoctoral trainee, per year, and an additional $4000 per postdoctoral trainee, per year, will be provided. For individual postdoctoral fellowships: • Predoctoral institutional allowance: An additional $1450 per predoctoral fellow per year will be provided for health insurance as an allowable expense. • Postdoctoral institutional allowance: This category already includes health insurance as an allowable cost, but is now adjusted by an additional $850 per postdoctoral fellow per year, to be comparable with the institutional training grants. Your Responses to the Fall Newsletter First, I want to thank all of you who wrote to me after the last newsletter to share your thoughts, concerns, and creative ideas for facing the challenges before NIH. I read every response. I have senior leadership at work on many of your suggestions. Testimony Before the Appropriations Subcommittees On March 6, 2007, I testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and March 19 before the corresponding Senate Subcommittee, and told them that the 21st century will be for the life sciences what the past century had been for the physical sciences. Mastery of the biological world will have impact not only upon health, but also upon our ability to develop sensitive solutions to environmental and energy challenges and will be a key determinant of national competitiveness. Key ideas I shared with them included the challenges that face our society due to the unsustainable growth rate of health expenditures. NIH and our scientists believe we are in a transformative phase of the biomedical and behavioral sciences, where opportunities for discoveries and their translation have greatly expanded. We are moving into a time where rather than intervening, often too late in a disease process, we will be in a new era where medicine will be more predictive, personalized and preemptive, through a greater scientific understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that lead to disease years before disease strikes the patient. In a relatively constant budget, we made the tough but necessary choices to ensure that the investment and momentum of biomedical research continues. We must know where we must be in the future to create a sustainable environment for the discoveries needed to transform people's health. I shared some recent health-related progress with the committees. • NIH-funded research helped reduce fatal heart disease in women. From 2003 to 2004, there was a decrease of fatal heart disease in women of nearly 17,000 deaths, moving the statistics from 1 in 3 women dying to 1 in 4. • Mortality rates in cancer are falling. Cancer is the second leading cause of death, and this year, for the second year in a row, the absolute number of cancer deaths has declined despite the growth and aging of the population — a truly unprecedented event in medical history. More effective therapies have also led to improved outcomes for more than 10 million cancer survivors. • NIH-funded research gives us more information to intervene in diabetes. Nearly 21 million Americans have diabetes. The NIH-funded Diabetes Control and Complications Trial confirmed that individuals with diabetes can cut their risk for nerve disease by 60%, and half their risk for kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, by intensively controlling their blood sugar levels. These same tight controls can lower the risk for eye disease by more than 75% — a critical finding for those who would lose their sight to eye disease through diabetic retinopathy. • NIH-supported research to treat cognitive decline brings improvement. In 2006, NIH research developed new strategies to help depressed people become symptom-free and prevented disease recurrence in older adults with single-episode depression. • . . . and much, much more. Additional noteworthy advances included the development of promising new drugs for tuberculosis, inflammatory disease, and muscular dystrophy. We saw the development of exciting experimental results of vaccines against increasingly dangerous staph infections and against the H5N1 avian flu virus; the promising vaccine against HIV/AIDS; and, the discovery last month of the unique molecular weak spot in the armor of the HIV virus. NIH Core Strategic Vision: • Transform medicine and health from a Curative to a Preemptive paradigm • Support basic research to identify the earliest molecular stages of disease in complex biological systems • Accelerate translation of findings from the bench to the bedside to the community • Provide the evidence and knowledge base to allow for a rational transformation of our healthcare system At the hearing I shared our current challenges, and our strategic vision for a future where the model is not curative, but preemptive. I described the power of personalized medicine and the interplay between what is predictive, preemptive and personalized in order to contribute to human health in this new century. I shared our budget priorities, nurturing a new generation of scientists and sustaining innovation. And, I talked with them about the way to maintain momentum toward health in the new century, closing with "I ask you to consider the challenges and the opportunities before us today in medicine and health, and the essential role of biomedical research. We have the key elements in place for overcoming a host of diseases and conditions and their societal burden, and momentum is on our side. Our research efforts, with our partners at the universities and within industry, have ushered in revolutionary changes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Sustaining the pace of biomedical discovery is essential to realizing a true and necessary transformation of medicine and health in our country. The Joint Resolution Impact The FY 2007 Joint Resolution increases NIH funding by $687 million over FY 2006 and provides an increase of about 1% to Institutes and Centers and directly supports the Common Fund at $483 million. Reauthorization is Being Implemented When the President signed into law the National Institutes of Health Reform Act of 2006 on January 15, it was only the third NIH omnibus reauthorization in our history and it signaled renewed confidence in the NIH mission, its employees, and its leadership. I see only benefits emerging from this opportunity. For example, using the prototype of the NIH Roadmap for Biomedical Research, the Reauthorization institutionalizes the concept of greater trans-NIH research planning and coordination. It mandates the establishment of a Common Fund for areas of cross-cutting science that will be expected to have especially high impact on the way that science is conducted and will benefit the missions of multiple Institutes and Centers. Barbara Alving Named Director of NIH's National Center for Research Resources I am pleased to announce Barbara Alving, M.D. is the new director of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). As Acting Director of NCRR, Dr. Alving has overseen the launch of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program — a new national consortium of academic health centers that will transform the conduct of clinical and translational research to ensure that biomedical discoveries are rapidly translated into prevention strategies and clinical treatments for rare and common diseases. Dr. Alving has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the recent efforts of the NIH to energize the discipline of clinical and translational research across the nation. The CTSA program marks the first systemic change in clinical research in 50 years and is a critical component of how we will effectively re-engineer the clinical research enterprise, including training the next generation of researchers. It will be with Dr. Alving’s vision, creativity, and leadership that we will be able to maximize our investment in the CTSA consortium, ensure that benefits extend to the greater research community, and that new medical advances are delivered to the people who need them. In 1999, she joined the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) as the Director of the Division of Blood Diseases and Resources. She then became the NHLBI Deputy Director and Acting Director while also serving as the Director of the Women's Health Initiative (2002-2006). In 2005, I tapped her to be the Acting Director of NCRR. The NCRR budget of greater than $1 billion will enable investigators throughout the country to conduct research that ranges from basic and clinical projects to community outreach and education. NCRR funding provides training and research opportunities at minority institutions and colleges, as well as in academic centers located in states that are challenged by distance and low or often rural populations. Rodgers, M.D., Named Director of NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases On April 2, 2007, I announced the appointment of Griffin P. Rodgers, M.D., as director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Griff Rodgers is an outstanding physician-scientist and molecular hematologist. He has made singular contributions to the study of globin disorders and is internationally recognized for his contributions to the development of effective therapy for sickle cell anemia and other genetic diseases of hemoglobin. In addition to his research experience, Dr. Rodgers is a dedicated and knowledgeable clinician and a first rate research administrator. He has all the qualities we search for in an Institute Director. Dr. Rodgers, who was appointed Deputy Director of NIDDK in January 2001, and then Acting Director of NIDDK as well as chief of NIDDK's Clinical and Molecular Hematology Branch, which he has headed since 1998. As the new Director of the NIDDK, Dr. Rodgers will oversee an annual budget of $1.8 billion and a staff of 650 scientists, physician-scientists, and administrators. The Institute conducts and supports research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health including diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases and nutrition, including obesity; and kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases. NIDDK conducts and supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspecialty fields as well as many basic science disciplines at its research facilities in Bethesda, Md. and Phoenix, Ariz. and at research institutions and medical centers throughout the United States. In addition, NIDDK also supports education programs to translate the results of research to health professionals, patients and the public. Krensky, M.D. has been selected as the first NIH Deputy Director for the Office of Portfolio Analysis and Strategic Initiatives (OPASI). Alan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973, and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. At the Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Krensky most recently served as professor of pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Immunology and Transplantation Biology, Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics, and Associate Dean for Children's Health. Women in Science — A Distinctive Path I was particularly moved by the letters I received after the last newsletter that told in detail about the challenges women in science, and families in science have experienced. I have established a Working Group on Women in Biomedical Careers to examine issues raised in the recent National Academies report, "Beyond Bias and Barriers, Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering," and to respond to the challenges issued to government funding agencies to maximize the potential of women scientists and engineers. As I said at the NIH announcement NIH Leads Effort to Help Women in Science and Medicine Fulfill Potential of the Working Group, it is critical to address the barriers that women face in hiring and promotion at research universities in many fields of science. When I appointed the NIH Working Group on Women in Biomedical Careers, I wanted to help address this challenge and to develop innovative strategies and tangible actions that can be implemented to promote the advancement of women in research careers both within the NIH intramural community and throughout the extramural research community. I will co-chair this committee with Dr. Vivian Pinn, Associate Director for Research on Women's Health and Director of the Office of Research on Women's Health, and a distinguished woman in science. The working group will carefully consider the recommendations in the National Academies report, and I will report back to you about our progress. New Investigators NIH has a strong commitment to support new investigators as the major way to expand the pipeline of talent needed to support biomedical research of the future. NIH will maintain a level of New Investigators in 2007 at a comparable level to the average of the most recent five years. • This means NIH will support, at a minimum, 1500 First-Time Investigators on competing R01 awards in FY 2007. • NIH established a new award within the Roadmap called the NIH Director's New Innovator Award. NIH is taking specific steps to buttress investigators whose R01 applications receive review scores near the Institute or Center nominal payline and who have limited additional support. Program administrators will identify and nominate applications near the payline for conversion to an NDBA. Awards will be selected based on the scientifically creative and innovative approaches that meet the mission of the Institute or Center. NIH will devote $91 million dollars to this effort. NIH Director's New Innovator Award In times of tight budgets, it is more important than ever to fund new investigators and innovative research. To address these twin goals, I am launching the NIH Director's New Innovator Award. This program will support new investigators who propose highly innovative research projects with the potential for exceptionally great impact on biomedical or behavioral science. We expect to make at least 14 New Innovator awards in September 2007. Each grant will be for 5 years and up to a total of $1.5 million in direct costs plus applicable facilities and administrative costs. NIH Director's Bridge Award NIH will offer the NIH Director’s Bridge Award (NDBA) which is designed to provide continued but limited funding for new and established grantees who have submitted a competing renewal grant application that describes a highly meritorious project but has fallen below the payline. The NDBA will one year of additional support to give the Principal Investigator time to continue their research while strengthening a resubmission application. NIH Facts For Your Files From a Harris Interactive Poll: According to a nationwide Harris Poll of 2,337 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive(R) between January 11 and 18, 2007, 63% of the public claims it knows what NIH does and 75% of those individuals think we are doing a good job. 	Pilot Study to Shorten the Review Cycle for New Investigator R01 Applications -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notice Number: NOT-OD-06-013 Key Dates Release Date: November 30, 2005 Update: The following update relating to this notice has been issued: April 13, 2006 (NOT-OD-06-060) - See this notice for Clarification of Submission Dates for the Pilot Study to Shorten the Review Cycle for New Investigator R01 Applications Issued by National Institutes of Health (NIH), (http://www.nih.gov) Shortening the review cycle is a high priority for the National Institutes of Health and the biomedical and behavioral research communities. There is also great interest in the career development of scientists and NIH is committed to supporting new investigators* in their efforts to obtain R01 research grant funding. Since new investigators by definition do not have R01 support, any delay in the ability to submit an amended application could have a negative impact on their careers. Cognizant of the pressure on new investigators to obtain NIH R01 funding, the Center for Scientific Review convened a trans-NIH working group to develop a process to shorten the referral and review cycle in order to permit a new investigator to submit an amended application for the next submission date. Although the number of new investigators who will be able to take advantage of this rapid turnaround process will be relatively small, the impact on the careers of these new investigators could be significant. The working group recommended an initial pilot, followed by an evaluation phase before consideration of modification and/or expansion. The results of this pilot will be analyzed and a determination made as to whether to expand this to all R01 applications submitted by new investigators. Further analysis will be done to determine if this should be expanded to all R01 applications and also to consider if other grant mechanisms should be included. Significant expansion of this pilot will be dependent on the full implementation of the electronic submission process. Notices about any extensions of this pilot and any expansions will be published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. The pilot described in this notice is designed to shorten the time to the next review for some new investigators who are not successful in a R01 grant submission and are readily able to address the concerns raised and issues identified in the Summary Statement. Under carefully defined circumstances for this pilot, new investigators will be able to resubmit amended applications for the next review meeting, rather than waiting a cycle. This will shorten the time for the next consideration of the resubmission application by four months. This pilot incorporates a number of features, including a shortened time for reviewers to consider applications, earlier study section meetings, accelerated production of Summary Statements, and a delayed submission date for these amended applications. Since NIH limits the number of resubmissions to two, new investigators will need to consider carefully whether this option is appropriate for their situation. Consultation with Institute/Center program staff and senior colleagues will be important in this process. In most cases resubmissions of R01 applications from new investigators utilizing this accelerated process may not be desirable. The Study Sections that are participating in this pilot are listed at the end of this document. Only R01 applications from investigators that meet the NIH definition of new investigators that are assigned to these study sections are included in this pilot. The Summary Statements for these applications will include an explicit note that identifies the application as being eligible for this pilot. Applications submitted for the February/March 2006 dates (cycle I) will be reviewed by June 15, 2006 and Summary Statements will be available in the NIH Commons no later than June 20, 2006 . Should new investigators choose to participate in this pilot, they will be able to send a resubmission application to NIH for a special July 20, 2006 receipt date to be reviewed at the next study section meeting in September/October 2006. For researchers in the United States, that task just got a little easier. Almost a decade ago, with financial support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, AAAS and Science launched GrantsNet, a new online science-funding database. Ever since it started, GrantsNet has been a key source of science-funding information for experienced scientists and trainees alike. And GrantsNet has always been free. This month, GrantsNet started adding new content and features that will make it the most comprehensive online resource for science research and education funding. In GrantsNet 2.0, scientists now have one place to look for new science-funding programs: one URL to bookmark, one set of listings to browse, and one collection of search terms. GrantsNet now includes comprehensive listings of all new science-funding programs from the U.S. government, to complement the nongovernmental sources that have always been GrantsNet's bread and butter. "This significant expansion of GrantsNet will greatly advance the AAAS goal of providing useful resources to the scientific community at all stages of their careers," says Alan Leshner, chief executive officer of AAAS. "This will make ScienceCareers.org the most comprehensive, freely available one-stop source for job-seeking advice, grant-getting advice, and actual job opportunities." What's new in GrantsNet? The big change in GrantsNet is the addition of funding programs from all the U.S. government agencies that support science. When GrantsNet started in 1998, it focused on biomedical-research funding from private foundations and other not-for-profit organizations. As recently as 2 years ago, GrantsNet called its monthly compilation of listings the Biomedical Funding News. Since then, GrantsNet has expanded its focus to include science funding from a wider range of nongovernment sources, covering more scientific disciplines. But even after this expansion, the number of listings in the physical sciences, social sciences, and engineering remained small. Beginning in March 2007, GrantsNet began importing science-funding announcements from the U.S. government's central funding portal, Grants.gov. Each day, GrantsNet downloads the latest government funding announcements, picks out the ones with science, and transfers those to GrantsNet. These new programs are added to GrantsNet's large and growing collection of science grants from foundations and not-for-profit organizations. Predictably, most of the government funding opportunities in GrantsNet come from the agencies with the largest research budgets: the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and NASA. But the collection also includes announcements from sources that even experienced PIs may not have considered. Here are a few examples of programs imported from Grants.gov just this month: · The Department of Defense's Army Research Lab seeks proposals on the detection of improvised explosive devices. · The Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsors research on the effects of lead-based paint exposure and other housing-related health hazards. · The Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides scholarships for bachelor's-level training in the food and agricultural sciences and for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. · USDA's Economic Research Service funds studies of food-assistance delivery. · The U.S. Geological Survey at the Department of the Interior seeks proposals for research on earthquake occurrence and effects. Finding government grants The quickest and easiest way to find the government entries is to use GrantsNet's Funding Directory. In the search box, enter a key word from the name of the agency, such as Interior, or Agriculture, or NASA, or NIH. GrantsNet will return a list of programs for the organizations with that key word. Entries returned with the GO icon are programs that are still accepting proposals. Or, you can browse through the alphabetical listing of organizations. Remember that GrantsNet entries use the official name of the agency (this is the government, after all), so most Cabinet-level departments are listed under "U.S.," as in U.S. Department of Agriculture or U.S. Department of Defense. The National Science Foundation, NIH, and NASA are listed under N, for National. Of course, you don't have to use the Funding Directory to access government grants. Just search the database on a key word, a discipline, or however you wish, and government programs will be returned alongside private programs. New Funding News features Science Careers publishes all the new GrantsNet program entries from all sources in its monthly Funding News; we dropped the "Biomedical" from the title in late 2005. Beginning with the April issue, we've renamed the two main categories. Now you will find the new GrantsNet programs listed under either: (1) Research Funding or (2) Student and Institutional Support. But the most important new additions to the Funding News are the RSS feeds, one each for Research Funding and Student and Institutional Support, which we will update monthly. RSS--short for Really Simple Syndication--provides Web users with alerts of new content directly on their browsers. In this case, the content consists of lists of new GrantsNet programs. Subscribers to the new feeds will be able to see the Funding News entries displayed in stand-alone feed readers or online services such as My Yahoo and Google Reader. Despite the addition of these new features, it's still the same old GrantsNet you know and love. GrantsNet 2.0 still doesn't require fees, or even registration, for browsing and searching. But if you plan to use GrantsNet frequently, you can open an account (at no charge), which will let you save search terms and individual grants for later recall. And the Funding News will continue to include the Deadline Watch, which provides a reminder of proposal due dates coming up in the next 6 weeks. Researchers and students know there's no escaping the chase for money. But the new features in GrantsNet 2.0 can ease some of the pain in hunting for research funding and student support.
