Capillarization of the liver is a change in the sinusoidal endothelial cells of the liver microcirculation that leads to decreased uptake of oxygen and other substances by hepatocytes. In recent years Le Couteur's group has discovered a forme fruste of capillarization called pseudocapillarization that occurs with aging (humans over age 40 and older experimental animals). This has implications for atherosclerosis (his group and others have demonstrated that capillarization impairs chylomicron remnant clearance), drug metabolism, regulation of endothelial cell phenotype, and hepatocyte function. Pizza will be served.

The overall aim of Dr. Cheng is to determine the molecular mechanisms in immune responses and cancer therapy. Dr. Cheng's laboratory at UCLA studies the role of signal transduction and gene expression network through the TNF receptor, Toll-like receptor (TLR), and Nod families during the process of innate and adaptive immune responses. The TNF receptor family members are involved in regulating cell survival, adaptive immune and inflammatory responses. Dr. Cheng's group has developed and is using a comprehensive system that combines biochemical and microarray analysis, cell-based assays, as well as animal models to determine the role and the specificity of individual receptors, signaling pathways and their targeting molecules in immune and inflammatory responses to bacterial and viral infections, as well as in cancer therapy.   Mitochondrial division is an essential component of cell function and replication. Dr. Alex van der Bliek was the first to show that a dynamin-related protein (Drp1) was required for mitochondrial division. Since this pivotal finding Dr. van der Bliek's group have discovered additional factors that cooperate with Drp1 in mitochondrial division. The recent finding that Drp1 is also required for apoptosis demonstrates the central role of mitochondria in cell biology. Pizza will be served.

Dr. Bissell's work has contributed significantly to the understanding of the role of TGF-beta and other cytokines in wound healing and fibrosis in liver. More recently, Dr. Bissell's work has focused on the mechanisms that control liver progenitor (oval) cell proliferation. He has shown that, following injury, TWEAK (a TNF family member) stimulates cell proliferation of oval cells in liver through its receptor Fn14. The expression of the receptor is increased in chronic hepatitis C indicating a role for the pathway in human disease. TWEAK exclusively targets oval cells and, unlike other growth factors, has no effect on the proliferation of mature hepatocytes. Refreshments will be served.
