ASTRONAUT SCHOLARSHIP

Description:

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation was established originally in 1984 as the Mercury Seven Foundation by the six surviving members of America’s original Mercury Seven astronauts. Since its founding, more than 100 astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs have united to aid the United States in retaining its world leadership in science and technology by providing college scholarships for the very best and brightest students pursuing science, technology, engineering or math degrees.The foundation now awards 28 scholarships annually, each worth $10,000, for a total of $280,000. They seek college students who exhibit motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in the science or engineering field of their major.

BEINECKE SCHOLARSHIP

Campus Deadline: January 31, 2013

Description: Scholarship program for individuals pursuing graduate study (master's or doctoral program) in the arts, humanities, and social sciences at any accredited university around the world. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and $30,000 while attending graduate school. Students may supplement this award with other scholarships, research grants, or assistantships.

Eligibility:
Candidates must:

  • be a junior during the 2012-2013 academic year (graduating between December 2013 and August 2014)
  • plan to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities or social sciences (graduate study in neuroscience is not supported by the Beinecke Scholarship)
  • have a superior academic record and personal promise as an undergraduate student
  • be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • have a history of receiving need-based financial aid during undergraduate years
  • have USC endorsement

BOREN AWARDS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDY

1. BOREN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

December 10, 2012 for 2013-2014 study year (summer 2013, fall 2013 and/or spring 2014)

Description: Program seeks to enhance U.S. understanding of foreign cultures, strengthen our economic competitiveness, and ensure our national security by fully funding students to enter a study abroad program with intent to learn a new language. It is designated for students enrolled in study-abroad programs OUTSIDE OF Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Western Europe. Students may apply for year or semester programs although year long programs are preferred. Summer only term is limted to science, techonology, engineering and mathematics majors.

Eligibility:
Candidates must:

  • be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application
  • be a undergraduate freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior
  • apply to a study abroad program related to academic and career goals

2. BOREN GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

National deadline: January 31, 2013

Description: Boren Fellowships provide support for overseas study, domestic study, or a combination of both. Boren focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. The fellowships can be applied to study abroad in all countries except Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Although study outside the United States is not required, successful applications generally include a significant overseas component.

Eligibility: Candidates must:

  • be a U.S. citizenship at the time of application
  • be enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university located within the United States
  • include a plan for language study in a modern language other than English in your application.

CHURCHILL SCHOLARSHIP

Campus Deadline: October 19, 2012 for 2013-2014 study year

Description: The Churchill Scholarship provides tuition and funding toward graduate work in engineering, mathematics and the physical and natural sciences at Churchill College, Cambridge University. Funds cover all University and College tuition and fees (approximately $25,000). In addition, Scholars receive a living allowance of £10,000 for nine-month programs, £12,000 for eleven-month programs, and £13,000 for twelve-month programs. Scholars also receive an allowance of up to $1,000 for travel to and from the United Kingdom, as well as reimbursement of application fees for a UK visa. The total award is worth approximately $45,000 to $50,000.

Desired qualities are outstanding achievement in academic work as indicated by course grades, a capacity for original, creative work as shown by special recognitions or letters of references, and intellectual leadership, character and adaptability.

Elibility: Candidates must:

  • be a U.S. Citizen
  • be between the ages of 19 and 26
  • hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a United States college or university, and may not have attained a doctorate.
  • be nominated by USC

CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP (CLS) PROGRAM

National Deadline: Fall 2012

Description: A program of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the CLS offers intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2013. CLS institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks.

Languages:

  • Arabic, Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
  • Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu: Beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
  • Chinese, Japanese, Russian: Intermediate or advanced level.

Basic Eligibility: Candidates must:

  • be a U.S. Citizen
  • be an enrolled undergraduate, master's or Ph.D. student
  • present a study, plan, or project that can be completed in one academic year

FULBRIGHT STUDENT GRANT

Description: Fulbright provides full funding for a year abroad in over 150 countries for graduating seniors and graduate students who are U.S. citizens. Fulbright grants generally provide round-trip transportation; language or orientation courses, where appropriate; tuition, in some cases; book and research allowances; a maintenance allowance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; and supplemental health and accident insurance. While excellence in the field of study and a strong academic record are preconditions for this fellowship, candidates are also selected using the following criteria: their project is feasible, they have the language qualifications they need for their specific program, have knowledge of the host country, and they possess characteristics that may make them a good ambassador. Currently enrolled students are required to apply through USC, rather than applying “at large."

The Fulbright program also offers different types of grants such as:

  • an English Teaching Assistantship to one of over 60 countries
  • Travel grants to Germany, Hungary and Italy
  • Public Health and Science grants to Australia, Chile, Indonesia, and the Netherlands
  • Fulbright Business Grants to Australia, Mexico, Netherlands or Spain
  • Fulbright Journalism Grants to Germany, Spain or the United Kingdom
  • Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health to Botwana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, Brazil, and Peru

GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP

National deadline (varies depending on country of citizenship):

- October 16, 2012 (for U.S. citizens normally resident in the U.S.);
- December 4, 2012 (citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and U.S. citizens normally resident outside the U.S.)

Description:
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is for one year of study as an affiliated student or graduate student at the University of Cambridge. Scholarship includes the following: tuition, a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single student, and one return economy airfare. Students can use the grant toward a second Bachelor degree as an affiliated student, one-year postgraduate courses, or research leading to the degree of PhD. In selecting Gates Cambridge Scholars, the foundation seeks students of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise. Students are encouraged to provide evidence of their ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline.

Eligibility: Candidates must:

  • hold, or expect to obtain before the application deadline, a bachelor’s degree
  • gain admission to the University of Cambridge and to a constituent college (the application procedures are separate from the selection procedures for selection as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. Please note, those applying for a Master's or Doctoral study are admitted to Cambridge through the Board of Graduate Studies; those applying for a second Bachelor's degree are admitted by a College).
  • be under the age of 30

Description: The Gilman Scholarship provides awards for undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs. The program encourages students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations.

Eligibility: Candidates must:

  • be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad.
  • apply to or have been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by USC
  • study abroad for at least four weeks in one country. programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least four consecutive weeks.
  • be studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list.

GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP

Description: For undergraduate study leading to careers in mathematics or natural science or engineering. The scholarship awards up to $7,500 for the remaining year(s) of study. Desired qualities include a highly competitive grade point average and commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her chosen field of study. It is also expected that students selected as scholars will pursue a doctoral degree.

Eligibility:
Candidates must:

  • be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • be a sophomore or junior at the time of application
  • have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA (recommended GPA, 3.5 or higher)
  • have selected a field of study that will permit admission to a graduate or professional program in preparation for a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering

JACK KENT COOKE GRADUATE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

Description: The Graduate Arts Award enables students with exceptional artistic or creative promise and significant financial need to pursue up to three years of study at a graduate institution in the U.S. or abroad. The amount of the award varies depending on financial aid as well as other funding sources the student currently receives however, it can be worth up to $50,000 per year for up to three years. The award provides funding for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books.

Eligibility: Candidates must:

  • be a college senior or a recent graduate (within the last 5 years)
  • plan to pursue a graduate degree in the performing arts, visual arts, or creative writing
  • have a minimum 3.2 cumulative gpa
  • plan to begin first graduate degree program in the coming fall

KILLAM FELLOWSHIP

Description: The Killam Fellowships Program is a scholarship program which allows undergraduate students from accredited degree granting colleges and universities to participate in a bi-national residential exchange program between Canada and the United States of America. Scholarship recipients spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country. The program is designed to encourage exceptional undergraduate students in the two countries by providing a unique opportunity for academic exchange.

Eligibility: Candidates must:

  • be a citizen of Canada or the United States be a full-time undergraduate student in good standing at a degree granting institution in Canada or the United States meet the eligibility requirement of their home university (as they relate to the participation in international exchange programs) be fluent in English (and French, as appropriate)
  • have a superior academic record
  • be nominated by his/her university to receive a Killam Fellowship.

Description: The Henry Luce Foundation seeks to develop a new level of understanding of Asia among future leaders of American society. The program is aimed at students with varied academic backgrounds who demonstrate leadership and have had no prior experience in Asian affairs. Leadership can be broadly defined by the following characteristics: initiative, creativity, the respect of one's peers, maturity, strength of character, self-confidence tempered by self-awareness, a sense of responsibility, sensitivity, a positive personality. The scholarship funds a one-year internship placement in the following countries in East, Southeast and South Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, China and Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Description: The Marshall Scholarships are available for graduate study in most universities in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland). Up to forty Marshall Scholarships will be awarded. Traditional scholarships fund two years of study. Eight of the awards will be for one year only. One year applicants must have a clear post-scholarship plan that demonstrates why spending one year in the UK would be beneficial to the candidate. Desired qualities are demonstrated social concern and evidence that a candidate will be a leader both within his or her profession and within the broader community.

  • be a graduating senior or have graduated from their undergraduate college or university no more than two years before applying

Description: The George Mitchell Scholarship is a competitive program for individuals wishing to pursue one year of study at one of nine institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Description: The Rhodes Scholarship brings students from eighteen countries and five continents to the University of Oxford in England. Scholarship includes tuition and a stipend toward a doctorate, master’s or second bachelor’s degree at the University of Oxford. Scholarships are awarded in a national competition with state and regional interviews. Study is funded for a one- two- or three-year period. The most important desired quality of a Rhodes Scholar is excellence in the overall academic record, complemented by qualities of leadership, writing ability, social concern, and athletic activity.

  • be between eighteen and twenty-four years of age

ROTARY AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Description:
The awards are for one year of university study in any field, with the possibility of 1-2 months of intensive language training during the summer. Study is available in more than 100 countries that have a Rotary Club. USC does not take part in the screening process; thus, contact with a local Rotary Club is required.

Eligibility:
Candidates must:

  • be citizens of a country in which there are Rotary clubs
  • have completed at least two years of college-level coursework or equivalent professional experience before commencing their scholarship studies
  • apply directly through a Rotary club in the your legal or permanent residence or place of full-time study or employment
  • not be Rotarians, Honorary Rotarians, or employees of a club, district, or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International. Spouses, lineal descendants (child or grandchild by blood or legal adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, and ancestors (parent or grandparent by blood) of persons in the foregoing categories are also ineligible.
  • not be students seeking to continue studies already begun at a foreign institution.
  • if applying for Academic-Year and Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships, candidates must be proficient in the language of the proposed host country. UDALL SCHOLARSHIP

Description: The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to sophomore and junior level college students committed to careers related to the environment including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, economics, and other related fields; or tribal public policy, or Native American health care. The Foundation several awards of up to $5000 for tuition, room and board, and other educational expenses. The scholars attend a four day orientation in Tucson, Arizona to meet the other scholars, elected officials, and other environmental and tribal leaders. Students who are not selected as scholars can receive honorable mentions of a one time honorarium of $350 in addition to access to the alumni network.

Eligibility:
Candidates must:

  • be a full time sophomore or junior level student pursuing a bachelors degree during the 2012-2013 year
  • pursue a career in tribal public policy, Native American health care, or the environment
  • have at least a minimum 3.0 cumulative gpa
  • be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident
