Maryalice
Jordan-Marsh is an Associate Chair and Associate Professor.
What kind of research
do you conduct?
At present I am working with Peggy
McLaughlin, Annenberg School for Communication and IMSC
Engineering to develop a haptics prototype with cyberglove
to teach MDs and RNs some physical examination skills.
In
a typical semester, how many undergraduates do you work
with? What kind of research activities do the undergraduate
students perform?
I typically work with two undergraduates. He or she
would assist in puzzling out relevant questions; search and
summarize literature; learn software and internet skills
relevant to conducting research; test new equipment; develop
project notebooks; assist in preparing reports, potential
for presenting poster at professional meetings
What are some
of your recent undergraduate projects?
One student used a database on Korean,
Latino, Chinese older adults and health communication and
identified question related to gender differences. The
student prepared a poster abstract with faculty for the
regional research meeting and got accepted and prepared the
poster. The student presented at USC and at the regional
meeting -- the only undergraduate. I am now preparing a
publication with the student as first author and faculty to
be second.
In the previous year, undergraduates
participated in bi-weekly interdisciplinary roundtables to
design and conduct research on older adults and health
communication. Students recruited subjects, assisted with
focus group design and conduct, entered data, prepared
reports; presented at McNair local, regional, and national
meeting.
