The 3rd Annual Mellon Mentoring Honors Reception was held on Tuesday April 17th, at the University Club. The USC-Mellon Awards for Excellence in Mentoring seek to recognize exceptional mentoring. They are presented to faculty members and graduate students who demonstrate excellence in mentoring by guiding and nurturing collegial and professional development.

Among the awardees this year was Hanna Reisler, Lloyd Armstrong, Jr. Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the WiSE Advisory Board. Hanna was among four faculty members who were honored for "Faculty Mentoring Faculty."

In her statement about mentoring published in the program book, Hanna said, "Making time for mentoring means being accessible and letting others know that I am available whenever they need advice. In the past six years, I was fortunate to interact with an amazing group of women faculty in science and engineering who are struggling with the time-old issues of doing outstanding scholarly work while dealing with life challenges. All I do is tell them what I belive in and what I learned, and hope that in some way it would help them find their own unique way to succeed."

Also honored was Ph.D. student in Physics and Astronomy, Amy Cassidy, who was recognized among four other doctoral students for "Graduate Students Mentoring Undergraduate Students." Together with her colleague, Katie Mussack and a team of collaborators, Amy initiated the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics at USC.

In Amy's statement on mentoring she recounts, "I have chosen to be a mentor because I know that there are young women out there who are talented and smart and capable scientists but who may not pursue that path only because they lack the resources and encouragement to take it. I know the challenges and frustrations one may feel as a woman in physics and have information and experiences that I can pass along to help those who will one day be graduate students."

Congratulations to Hanna and Amy and thank you for your mentoring efforts!
