Gerald Loeb,
M.D.
As Director of
the Medical Device Development Facility of the Alfred Mann Institute
for Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Loeb oversees the development of
various technologies for management of chronic diseases and
rehabilitation of dysfunction. Many of their clinical applications
and ongoing clinical trials involve elderly patients. The largest
component of our research is in development of BION technology,
microminiature electrical stimulators that can be injected into
paralyzed muscles to prevent and treat various consequences of
stroke
Another major project is the development of a new class of wearable
chemical sensors based on percutaneous optical fibers; the first
application will be to measure glucose for the management of
diabetes. Other projects include a belt that will sense a fall and
deploy an airbag to prevent hip fractures, and a user-friendly video
teleconferencing system that works through existing television and
telephone equipment in the home.
