Stephen E. Toulmin

IHHC Co-Director Dr. Stephen E. Toulmin is the Henry R. Luce Professor for the Center for Multiethnic and Transnational Studies and Professor in the Department of International Relations. He was born in London, England and has since become a US citizen. He was educated at Cambridge University where he received his Ph.D. in Ethics. Dr. Toulmin has since served as a Fellow for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Honorable Doctor of Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, as well as an appointed position with the Government of Austria. In Dr. Toulmin's extensive career he has worked in the fields of humanities and philosophy with Northwestern University, University of Chicago, University of California at Santa Cruz, Michigan State University, Brandeis University, University of Leeds, Oxford University and King's College. Dr. Toulmin has published many books among them his most recent publications include, Return to Reason; The Inner Life, the Outer Mind; The Abuse of Casuistry (with A.R. Jackson); Cosmopolis: The Hidden Agenda of Modernity; and Beyond Theory. In addition to written works, Dr. Toulmin has worked on many films including The Tunnel of Eupalinus (B.B.C) and Earth and Sky (Leeds University).
